Fresh Grabs

Alright so Elliott Smith, mine is the indie blue version. Threw it on and within the first two songs got a couple a big pops and then it skipped, and I've never heard a record actually skip on my table before that wasn't caused by dirt or hairs on the vinyl so I figured it has to be dirt. So I cleaned it, which I should have done in the first place. And after the cleaning... this is a really nice press! The mastering is nice and crisp, I got through the entire first disc without a single pop and it sounds really nice! I will say that on the first track on mine there is a TINY amount of right channel crackle, like I mean TINY. I don't think a lot of systems would even would even pick it up, you have to keep in mind that my cart is just vicious for picking up ANY irregularities in presses. There is the possibility that other copies have more severe versions of this issue but on mine it's almost inaudible and it's only on the first track. Otherwise it's by far the best pressing of Elliott Smith I've had. I still find the mixing on his albums very odd, the fact that they almost never centre him in the mix and instead create the sonic imaging of there being like 5 different Elliott Smiths playing each song, it's very strange and most of his albums are mixed like this, but that's beside the point. I'm about to spin the second disc but so far this is a recommend from me. I paid $55 CAD for it. I don't think I would pay a whole lot more than that but it just depends on how much of a fan you are I suppose. Oh also both discs are dead flat.

But also keep in mind I had to clean it on a RCM in order to get this performance out of it. Without the cleaning it had some pops and a skip, although the skip played though with just a pop the second time I played through that section before I cleaned it. So if you don't have a spin clean or something more you might have a different experience than me.

I'll add my thoughts on the second disc live show in a little bit for anyone who cares.

And disc two is more of the same, nice mastering, really clean live recording. I've got two pops on side 3, but that's it. 2 pops across 4 sides. And honestly another cleaning might get rid of those too so for me this is a pretty solid recommend if you're a fan and can get it at a price in the 55 dollar range.

It’s the next 33 1/3 book in my journey. Took me a minute to decide which pressing to buy. I’m not familiar with it. Excited based on the love I see for it around here and elsewhere.
Oh wow you are in for a treat. It was actually Noel Gallagher spoke about this album in an interview around the time Dig Out Your Soul was releasing i think. I checked it out and immediately fell in love with the album. It really is amazing and one of my favourite albums ever now

How’s that pressing sound? That’s an album I want to add to my collection but also never really researched which ones are good that are on the affordable side.
Apparently this 2020 reissue of Getz/Gilberto sounds stellar! I've got the AP 45RPM pressing and that sounds stellar, but if I never picked up this album, I would likely go for this new reissue, as the reviews so far for it are very strong! And it's only one disc as well which is nice!

It's such a good album! It's one of @Skalap favourite albums ever I think, and it's one of my all-time favourites as well! I'm tempted to pick up this Acoustic Sounds reissue will hold back for now! But I would recommend this new reissue just based on the reviews!

I should have clarified—was wondering about Forever Changes! I love Getz/Gilberto but I have a nice AAA copy of it already. I pre-ordered Ballads and A Love Supreme And will probably go for the Nina Simone releases. Maaaybe I’ll go for one of the Bill Evans too but I have an AP or Trio 65 already. My copy of Trio 64 sounds fantastic too (have one of those DeAgostini Jazz at 33 1/3 pressings) but if these others sound great might upgrade it.

Yeah, I've got the Nina Simone titles Acoustic Sounds are reissuing but will get them, as they aren't audiophile pressings like the AP pressing of the Getz/Gilberto I have! I also got the Coltrane releases on wax already but want the Acoustic Sounds reissue too! Like, all those four albums are such wonderful albums, I want to hear a stronger sounding pressing and I know the Acoustic Sounds reissues will deliver that! I'm so excited for them!

I need to listen to that album; Forever Changes by Love! I see that MoFi has done a 2xLP 45RPM pressing of that album! I remember seeing it at my local once! I have a feeling I might love the album as it's a psychedelic album!

I’ll report out when I have a chance to spin. Will probably be this weekend as I want to give it a full dedicated spin.

At the risk of sounding contrary I'd say it's actually Pre-punk with strings. Saw Arthur Lee do the whole album live a few years back and it was Immense!

Check out Da Capo too if you're not familiar. 'Seven and Seven Is' is a balls out, legendary banger.

Ahhhhh ok, interesting! Thanks for the heads up! That’s amazing you saw the album get performed in it’s entirety live! 🙉⭐

I’ll remember Da Capo! Thanks for recommending that title! 👍

Also Brian McLean is Maria McKee's brother so you can rabbithole straight from Love to Lone Justice of you fancy getting your cowpunk on... And yes that's the Maria McKee who also provided Show Me Heaven for the film Days of Thunder which stars a certain actor who is renowned for having never starred in a bad movie. So there is a clear an indisputable link between Forever Changes by Love and Days of Thunder starring Tom Cruise. Good eh!
