Fresh Grabs

I think they are bootlegs for just that reason, I cant see him getting the sample clearance. Just looking at my shelf and I have Bizarre Tribe: A Quest To The Pharcyde (which is fantastic!), Yasiin Gaye: The Departure, A Common Wonder, and B.B. & The Underground Kingz - The Trill Is Gone (which I remember my local having as a RSD release but it must have been an unoffical one)
Looks like Fela Soul has just had a repress? Juno has it listed as incoming.

I still received a lot in the final month of this year, contrary to what I proclaimed I wouldn't do...

December Acquisitions

Ambient/Outer Sounds pickups:

Ana Roxanne - Because of a Flower
Ellen Fullman - music for the man who grew common in wisdom
Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Love is a Stream

20201231_034051.jpg

Ana Roxanne continues her beautiful ambient/ethereal concoctions from her mini-album last year, and expands those ideas to longer song lengths on her above debut full-length LP. Perfect for rainy nights.
Having been made aware of the Outer Sounds vinyl club, which has a line of releases that align with my tastes as far as esoteric music goes, I have made it a goal to possibly be a completionist in the club. If anything, it will help to explore further into avant garde / experimental / ambient music every month. The first two RotMs in the club are the two records above on the bottom row.

Jazz pickups:

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
Mark de Clive-Lowe
Art Blakey - Roots & Herbs
Kenny Burrell - Introducing Kenny Burrell
Wayne Shorter - Etcetera

20201231_043002.jpg

I haven't listened to any of the Tone Poet releases shown above. I'm way behind on getting around to my unplayed albums. All good, I'm sure of it.

Current Year pickups:

A.A. Williams - Forever Blue
Roisin Murphy - Roisin Machine
Sevdaliza - Shabrang
Pacific Breeze 2: Japanese City Pop, AOR & Boogie 1972-1986

20201231_043252.jpg

This record by A.A. Williams seems to have fallen under the radar. A rather captivating blend of singer/songwriter and post-rock, with a very dusty, brooding atmosphere underpinning the album's 43-minute runtime. It well earns a place in my top50 for the year. Please check it out.
I came onto Roisin Murphy's new record far too late!!! This would've placed higher on my list had I been more diligent, but it gets an honorable mention for me. Very fun, and I'm sure these songs will fit immaculately in a DJ set.
Haven't been able to stop listening to Sevdaliza over the past month. I've tried, but Shabrang is a musical magnet that keeps pulling me back in. Something about a new brand of trip hop fused with trap that is so seductive. Sevdaliza's unique voice that calls to sounds of the Middle-East is what steals the show for me here. In my top50 for the year, and placing very high.
Glad to have the sequel to the LITA city pop compilation.

Miscellaneous pickups:

100 Gecs - 1000 Gecs
Broadcast - Haha Sound
Cluster - Cluster II

20201231_042423.jpg

Not sure if I will ever truly love 100 Gecs, but with the color repress now in my collection, I don't think I'll have a problem with resale if this band just isn't in the cards.
Liking this Broadcast album, but not quite loving it just yet. Tender Buttons clicked immediately, so maybe I'm missing something. Either way, it seems Haha Sound is out of print, so same situation with 100 Gecs.
This sophomore Cluster album is awesome! Krautrock with a lot of ambient, spacey textures. I like this even more than Zuckerzeit!

Four Tet - There is Love in You (Expanded Edition) & Remixes
Fugazi - The Argument
Jamie XX - In Colour

20201231_042604.jpg

One of my favorite electronic albums ever, There is Love in You got a stunning reissue. It sounds rich and color just flows out of the speakers. Haven't played the remixes yet!
Haven't played this Fugazi album yet either, but nabbed for the inexpensive price, and for the acclaim that it is among their best releases. Hopefully will get around to it very promptly!
Played a few tracks from the In Colour remaster, and it sounds slightly more dynamic (with much less surface noise). Decided to get black vinyl as single color vinyl seemed silly given the rainbow-colored album artwork. I'm glad the missing audio section in "Sleep Sound" was remedied.

Les Discrets - Ariettes Oubliées...
Mariah Carey - Butterfly
Tame Impala - Currents

20201231_042718.jpg

Pairing a previous N&G RotM with the sequel. More shoegazy, black metal divinity. Again, another album to pair with rain or the autumn months.
Not sure how this Mariah album was managed to be squeezed onto a single LP across 55+ minutes, but it seems acceptable. Not great though, as expected. This one will most likely not survive an eventual collection culling.
Read from other threads here that Currents got a repress at a different plant (MPO), with positive feedback, Went to buy it from Target with the B2G1 cancellation trick, and to my surprise, Target's stock of this album is indeed the 2020 MPO repress! It sounds quite a bit more dynamic than I remember and the vinyl is much more clean! Unfortunately, while it's not visible from the photo above, the album has a significant bend in the lower-left corner that comes close to reaching the vinyl inside. Requested a replacement, but they had no replacements available and got a refund...can't complain of course.

Secret Santa package:

Ill Considered - VI
K Frimpong - Backed by Vis-A-Vis
Shabaka and the Ancestors - Wisdom of Elders

20201231_041859.jpg

Thank you again to @Poly-Rythmo for this fantastic package! I enjoy all of these, and would love to get some more African music in this vein on a trip to (most likely) Mississippi Records or another local in my area with a notable selection. I still have your handwritten note tucked away.

Gorillaz - Song Machine, Season One
Waxahatchee - Saint Cloud

My last grabs of the year, from my great local. I haven't paid as much attention to anything vaguely indie in recent years so these are thanks to jogs from multiple people here and after a fair bit of steaming I was hooked. Also got 100 new inner sleeves for 12s and 7s as I'm hoping to buy even more used records next year. Good riddance 2020!

The mail over here has been crazy over the past few months. I have 2 packages that are over a month in transit yet some of these arrived in a matter of days.

Jon Batiste - Music From And Inspired By Disney Pixar Soul (Pixar, 2020 First Pressing)
Tenderlonious - Ragas From Lahore, Improvisations With Jaubi (22a, 2020 First Pressing)
The Stan Tracey Quartet - Captain Adventure (Steam, 1976 First Signed Pressing)
The Michael Garrick Quintet – Poetry And Jazz In Concert (Argo, 1964 First Mono Pressing)

I ordered the Soul soundtrack as soon as I finished watching the film and the extras, its fantastic and the package is really stunning. There is a really nice gatefold with the 'musicians' and the inner sleeve has a cool print. The soundtrack is split between Batiste's original compositions on side A and covers on side B (of music by Monk etc). I cant remember if I have already posted the Tenderlonious (time's just melding into itself) but I picked it up at my new local on @Mr Moore's recommendation just before Christmas. The next 2 are biggies, with the Stan Tracey being signed by the pianist as well as Art Themen (on saxophone). The Michael Garrick Quintet is an interesting one as it consists of poetry being read over the music. Amongst a horde of cassette tapes I picked up a few months back was a Joe Harriott documentary where they discuss Harriott's passion for poetry and how it played a key role in the progression of his music, so its an interesting release for sure.

Nice! I’m waiting on my copy of the Soul OST too. I ended up ordering the score, too. Listening on digital, it’s interesting to have both track lists mixed together like in the movie.

Christmas Day record haul has arrived! It’s been a while since I’ve been this giddy about a bundle of albums arriving. Think LA Woman is getting thrown on first :D. Ella & Louis is also in bound!

side note: wtf is up with that Ella album art? Might be the scariest piece of art I own. BF041E24-F2F2-4D13-9C8E-76F720A5C804.jpeg

Still counting these for last year’s purchases:

Super Deluxe 45rpm Royal Ballet - Added several classical titles last year. Xmas present from the wife. Nice.

Red version of Sir Paul - Got a Black to play. Red to collect #882/3000.

Bought several of the new great sounding Marley reissues. A couple more still in transit.

A OG used NM copy of classic West, Bruce, & Laing title. I should already own this but it is gone along with a few other classic LPs that mysteriously came up missing when I entered everything into Discogs. Whoever has them I hope you are enjoying my OG copies of Hawkwind Space Ritual and GD Europe’72. 😡

PBBB East-West is a great LP. I have an early original pressing. I want to compare the sound with the new SC reissue.

The artwork is 'Tete d'une Femme" by Jean Dubuffet and was owned by Norman Granz so I'm guessing it was his decision to use it.

I agree though, it's absolutely horrifying!

Heldon - Un Rêve Sans Conséquence Spéciale
Heldon - Heldon.6. Interface

IMG_5856.jpg

Heldon is a French electronic/guitar space-rock band that released seven albums from 1974-1979. I'm slowly trying to acquire all seven albums -- this takes me to four. Guitarist Richard Pinhas is a pretty interesting dude, having a PhD in Philosophy from the Sorbonne and is inspired by, among other things, "Nietzsche, Jimi Hendrix, or Kabbalah." He's still active today, releasing quality solo material and collaborating with groups like Merzbow. Nothing tops his work in Heldon in my book.

Ali Shaheed Muhammad & Adrian Younge / Azymuth ‎– Jazz Is Dead 4
Keleketla! - Keleketla!

IMG_5850.jpg

Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad's Jazz Is Dead series is interesting. For each release, they collaborate with one of their musical heroes to write and record new music. This edition with Brazilian jazz-funk masters Azymuth is awesome.

Speaking of collaboration, Keleketla! has it in spades. The story of how this album came together is a long one -- check out their Bandcamp page if you're interested -- but it is a collision of many styles and generations across musicians from South Africa, London, and America. It's all brilliant, and a last chance to catch the late, great Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen before his passing in April 2020. One of my favorite records of 2020.

Gordon Koang - Unity
Monophonics - It's Only Us

IMG_5860.jpg

Gordon Koang is a blind Sudanese musician who is considered the "Michael Jackson of South Sudan." He sought political asylum in Australia six years ago due to conflict in his home country. Although he's written 11 albums, this is the first release of his recorded music, which he made in Australia in 2019. This was a thoughtful Christmas present from my brother, who heard one of Koang's songs mashed up in a techno remix(!) and thought I would love the record. He was right!

Monophonics needs no introduction here. This was an awesome PIFsgiving PIF from the extremely generous and all-around good guy @Ethos99! Really love the record, and Colemine, as usual, continues to show how releases should be done with quality jackets and attractive color pressings at fair prices.

Barry Cleveland with Bob Stohl and Kat Epple - Stones Of Precious Water
Klaus Schønning - Lydglimt

IMG_5855.jpg

Completely coincidental that I picked up this Barry Cleveland record around the time I picked up the Heldon records, but Heldon’s Richard Pinhas and Barry Cleveland collaborated on a pretty awesome record in 2016 called Mu.

Cleveland’s Stones of Precious Water was released in 1986 on cassette-only, and Canadian label Morning Trip gave it its first vinyl release in 2020. I'm kind of at a loss on how to describe it, but its Bandcamp page describes it as "a revelatory collection that maps its way through textural fourth-world ambience, shimmering New Age, gently propulsive kosmiche, and jazz-inflected prog." YES.

Lydglimt is a remaster/reissue of Danish keyboard player Klaus Schønning's 1979 private press debut. Again, at a loss on how to describe it, so I'll go with the hype sticker: "An ethereal and mesmerizing electronic prog disco excursion into Nordic nature." It's actually a pretty great pairing with Stones of Precious Water. Both records are fantastic.
