12/12 – Santa and The Ice Cream Bunny: Play something that would likely be made better with some strong egg nog, or something that helps you go to sleep.

Melvins - Eggnog

Helps you go to sleep? Uh, no. But this is the strongest Eggnog I can think of. Goes nicely with strong egg nog

12/12 – Santa and The Ice Cream Bunny: This MST3K / Rifftrax favorite is listed in Wikipedia as follows: “Atrocious acting, cheap production values and a meandering long running time have earned a fan following as one of the worst Christmas movies ever made”. Play something that would likely be made better with some strong egg nog, or something that helps you go to sleep.

I like some of Colonel Bruce's material with the Aquarium Rescue Unit, but this one is a tough listen at times. Maybe being drunk while listening would make it better....or worse, hard to say. RIP Colonel Bruce.

12/11 – Free Play! What’s your favorite holiday special? Do you celebrate other holidays this month? Let us know what it is and play something that brings it to mind.

I tend to gravitate to the darker side of things, and this is a brilliant Christmas record that highlights the unhappy holidays more times than not.

This one has a break that goes the opposite of where you thought it was gonna...

Rodney Crowell - Christmas Everywhere

Nice choice, it's one of my favorites too.

12/8 - The Year Without a Santa Claus: My favorite part of this special is Heat Miser and Cold Miser, two brothers who are constantly at odds. Play something that focuses on Hot or Cold, however you want to define it. Or two brothers who are / have been at odds.

Joni Mitchell – For The Roses

"Cold Blue Steel And Sweet Fire"

12/13 - Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special: Mariah is everywhere in the Christmas season. Spin something you feel like was everywhere at one point

Sarah McLachlan - Surfacing

This is a really great album that unfortunately makes many people just immediately think of a very sad commercial that played every break on MTV.

12/9 – Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas: Best known for the Bing Crosby / David Bowie duet of Peace On Earth / Little Drummer Boy. Play something that bridges generations.

Betamax vs Clive Bell – Betamax vs Clive Bell
20231213_160025.jpg

The Comet Is Coming drummer Betamax recorded this album with avant-garde flautist Clive Bell, his father.

12/10 – Scrooged: Bill Murray stars in this version of a Christmas Carol. Since this is the second appearance of this story, play a Ghost of Christmas Present, something by an artist you are hoping to find underneath the tree this year.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – K.G. / L.W. (Explorations Into Microtonal Tuning Volume 2 & 3)

Until just a short few years ago Scrooged was my family's Christmas Eve tradition for decades, but my wife and Grandma vetoed it a few years back - which has allowed me to watch Die Hard instead!

Anyway, I'd be pretty stoked with a Gizzmas gift - but I'm gonna have to buy it for that to happen, so I guess we can consider this one it, since it arrived yesterday!

12/14 – A Christmas Story: Ralphie’s mom was so offended by the Leg Lamp / Major Award and what the neighbors would think that she ‘accidentally’ broke it. Play a record you suspect that your friends / family would ‘accidentally’ break, given the chance.

Jazz is not particularly valued in this household. Solo piano with grunting does not make things better

I love the grunting.

My wife doesn't care for solo Jagger, I can't blame her really.

Low - Double Negative

For me, this album reminds me of the first time I tried Salt & Vinegar potato chips as child. Initially, it was such a shock to my system. My initial reaction was almost a violent distain but after a moment or two of reflection I came to realize that what I initially thought of as revolting was actually exciting and invigorating. I was drawn back for more until I became enamored. The older we get, the less we experience moments like this so when they do occur I make sure to make a mental note. Still, I suspect most people would just assume the wiring on my speakers were going bad if they had to experience this album for the first time.

I'm sure one of the common traits of most folks on this forum is our ability to get obsessed with a given artist to the point where it can be an annoyance to others. I discovered that when I listened to too much Neil Young, Mrs. ImtheOcean would start to have a negative reaction. So I figured out a system to reset her ears in terms of vocals. Once Neil got to be too much, I moved to Pearl Jam. Eventually she'd get tired of Eddie's vocals and I'd start playing lots of Bob Dylan. That cycle would repeat (and be shortened), and when Dylan proved to be too much, I'd move to Tom Waits. She really doesn't like Tom Waits so that cycle is usually very short and I could move back to Neil and start the cycle over.

She's hip to it now, but it still works. I just need to keep a close eye on the Tom Waits records.

I'm looking forward to her Fumbling Towards Ecstasy 30th anniversary tour that she just announced. Shes a great live performer.

Despite being from the same neck of the woods as her, she's one I've never managed to catch live. And that album is her finest! Sadly the only Canadian dates currently listed are in the wrong part of the country. I wonder if anything more local will get added before Seattle.

I was out grocery shopping with my mom yesterday. On our way back home, “Where It’s At” came on the radio & she said the feedback during the hook sounded like our dog whining. I don’t think she’d be into the rest of the album either & wouldn’t complain if it had a tragic accident.

Cold Specks – I Predict A Graceful Expulsion
20231214_110407.jpg

Winter Solstice has long been one of the most important days of the year to me - my equivalent of marking the New Year outside of an arbitrary and broken calendar. How perfect that it turned out to be one of my wife's favourites too! If she could have her way, it would be the only holiday we celebrate this month since she absolutely hates Christmas (I'm ambivalent, myself), but family and society make it a bit too difficult to be practical. Winter Solstice is the focal point in our home, though. Christmas happens at the grandparents' place.
