Gadzooks! Its the December Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread!

12/12 – Santa and The Ice Cream Bunny: This MST3K / Rifftrax favorite is listed in Wikipedia as follows: “Atrocious acting, cheap production values and a meandering long running time have earned a fan following as one of the worst Christmas movies ever made”. Play something that would likely be made better with some strong egg nog, or something that helps you go to sleep.

Thundercat "Drunk" (2017 Brainfeeder)
The instructions for how to listen to this are printed on the album cover.

12/11 – Free Play! What’s your favorite holiday special? Do you celebrate other holidays this month? Let us know what it is and play something that brings it to mind.

I've never really been too big on holiday specials. I'll watch Charlie Brown and maybe Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, but this really only started since I've been married, as my wife is the one that has bought these on DVD years ago.

When I was a kid I did alway try to watch Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas - and then it disappeared for years. It was hard to find a VHS copy, and HBO stopped airing it.Later home video releases were even edited to remove Kermit or just remove some of his narrations. just after Henson sold the Muppets to Disney.

The outtakes that are on the DVD are amusing -

I missed out on the 2018 BFRSD release that was a non-picture disc, but they released it again the following year for BFRSD as a picture disc, but this doesn't sound all that bad...it's not the greatest audiophile quality recording to begin with.

12/10 – Scrooged: Play a Ghost of Christmas Present, something by an artist you are hoping to find underneath the tree this year.

Hum - Downward is Heavenward

Just got a shipping notice for a couple Hum preorders, might make it in time for Christmas.
Nice! Is this the new 2x45 reissue? I just picked up the new Yoy’d Prefer An Astronaut reissue and am looking forward to spinning it. Still deciding if I need this one too (probably).

I tend to gravitate to the darker side of things, and this is a brilliant Christmas record that highlights the unhappy holidays more times than not.

This one has a break that goes the opposite of where you thought it was gonna...

I'll give a nod to the film 'Santa Claus Conquers The Martians', a horrific piece of celluloid.

Conversely, this is a great album with a title and song that fits the aforementioned motif. If Mars had some Strats, Teles and Les Pauls, this whole fiasco could have likely been avoided...

Hoodoo Gurus - Mars Needs Guitars!

12/13 - Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special: Mariah is everywhere in the Christmas season. Spin something you feel like was everywhere at one point.

Ever since my teen years which began in 1974, there was no escaping this one. And for that reason, I never, ever, never need to hear 'Stairway' or 'Rock N Roll' ever again.

Don't come for my 'When The Levee Breaks' or 'Four Sticks' though.

Remember that time Neil Young kicked WTLB into the stratosphere...

Led Zeppelin - IV

This is a 2x33 issue I got a couple years ago but I think this was also overseen by the band and done by Ryan Smith. It sounds reallly good. I think Astronaut and Downward are both their best

Edit: Looks like the new copies of Downward are also 33 1/3…

This is available on Prime now, complete with Kermit narration. The Drum rolling outtakes are the best!

Truth. The Flaming Lips should have brought their instruments to Mars, it would have saved their movie as well. Although you do get to hear Steve from Blue's Clues curse.

Day 10: Scrooged

The Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station

I haven’t purchased the recent reissue of Without A Net specifically to give Santa Claus the opportunity to do the right thing and leave a copy under the tree.

12/13 - Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special: Mariah is everywhere in the Christmas season. Spin something you feel like was everywhere at one point.

Released in 1984, this album exploded quickly. Not only did it launch a ton of misuse and misunderstanding of the title track, it also brought Bruce from playing arenas to multiple nights at Los Angeles Coliseum by the end of his tour in 1985. Which happened to be when High School Me got to see him for the first time.

Kacey Musgraves - A Very Kacey Christmas
IMG_0330.jpeg

My favorite short form Christmas special is Charlie Brown Christmas, My favorite Christmas Movie is The Christmas Story, and my favorite musical Christmas special was the one that Kacey did for Prime Video a few years back. A big part of the appeal s the album, which is my favorite Christmas album of the past decade. It hits the sweet spot between classic and original tunes that all feel timeless.

Day 13: Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special

Taylor Swift
- 1989 (Taylor’s Version)

IMG_7779.jpeg

It really felt like the original version of this album & Taylor herself were everywhere when it originally came out, though that seems like nothing compared to today.

btw, I’d actually picked this album out for this prompt last night before realizing her birthday was today. uhhh… I meant to do that?

"Fairytale of New York " is everywhere during Xmas time and rightfully so. Sadly probably even more this year, but zhe whole record is great and had the pogues at the peak of their power. My second favorite Album by them after its predecessor rum, sodomy and the lash

As a kid, I loved this Jim Henson Christmas special called The Christmas Toy, which I’m convinced was a big inspiration for the idea of the Toy Story movies:

I enjoy “All I Want For Christmas Is You” as much as the next guy but there is only one Queen of Christmas and her name is Darlene Love.

Also, kudos to whoever edited together all of her Letterman performances into a single super cut.

12/8 - The Year Without a Santa Claus: My favorite part of this special is Heat Miser and Cold Miser, two brothers who are constantly at odds. Play something that focuses on Hot or Cold, however you want to define it. Or two brothers who are / have been at odds.

Parannoul - After the Magic

I wanted something cold, and this cover photo looks like it was taken on a pretty cold day. Plus, Korean bedroom shoegaze is so hot right now.
