Gadzooks! Its the December Vinyl Spin Challenge Thread!

12/16 – It’s A Wonderful Life: This holiday favorite has an angel sent from heaven to show George Bailey how much he’s meant to others. Play something with bells or chimes, to help an angel get its wings.

I could not find if anyone is reallz plating any bells or chimes on this, i thin its mostly vibraphones and triangles, but it has windchimes on it anyway

I am sure there is sleigh bells on “Good Vibrations” I think I have the isolation track on my hard drive somewhere. Plus there is a track literally named “wind chimes” and I don’t think Brian could have resisted dropping an actual wind chime into the mix for that one.

12/10 – Scrooged: Bill Murray stars in this version of a Christmas Carol. Since this is the second appearance of this story, play a Ghost of Christmas Present, something by an artist you are hoping to find underneath the tree this year.

New Order - Technique

My wife asked what album I might want for Christmas, and I said the reissue of New Order's Substance... 🤞

12/15 - My Little Pony – Hearth’s Warming Eve: This holiday episode focuses on the history of Equestria, and to quote @duke86fan is about “people not being assholes to one another and racial equality”. Play something designed to bring people together, or something about horses.

Matthew Herbert x London Contemporary Orchestra – The Horse
20231216_135939.jpg

Based around a full-size horse skeleton and working alongside the London Contemporary Orchestra and an expansive cast of special collaborators, this is Herbert in full flight, restlessly curious and culminating in starkly original, ritualistic music loaded with intent.
One of the major narrative arcs through the album is its representation of the evolution of human music itself, opening in a compelling, primitive flurry of custom-made flutes from the horse’s thigh bones and bows crafted from ribs and horse hair. By the mid-section you can hear a ritualistic twang of raw string (from a gut string stretched over the pelvis) give way to sustained compositional suites before crescendoing in a fierce electronic-acoustic fusion as grandiose as it is propulsive.

12/11 – Free Play! What’s your favorite holiday special? Do you celebrate other holidays this month? Let us know what it is and play something that brings it to mind.

Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

Every year we watch the Community episode "Regional Holiday Music," in which the gang is recruited one-by-one via original songs to be part of a glee club. I'm playing Grizzly Bear because a long time ago I saw a video on youtube where they played "Two Weeks" for old people and one of them asked "What is this, the glee club?" or something like that.

Day 16: It’s A Wonderful Life

I went with one of my favourite albums, bookended by what I think are church bells?

We are a nation with no geographic boundaries, bound together through our beliefs. We are like-minded individuals, sharing a common vision, pushing toward a world rid of colour-lines

Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814

In complete darkness we are all the same. It is only our knowledge and wisdom that separate us. Don’t let your eyes deceive you.

12/12 – Santa and The Ice Cream Bunny: This MST3K / Rifftrax favorite is listed in Wikipedia as follows: “Atrocious acting, cheap production values and a meandering long running time have earned a fan following as one of the worst Christmas movies ever made”. Play something that would likely be made better with some strong egg nog, or something that helps you go to sleep.

Fridge - Happiness

Every night I read for an hour or two before bed, and usually while listening to post-rock, electronic, jazz, or something more on the instrumental side. This album, from Four Tet's band, rides the line between post-rock and electronics.

I don't usually use music to sleep anymore - but when I did I used a Trent Reznor/NIN playlist that was this and his various movie scores.

12/13 - Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special: Mariah is everywhere in the Christmas season. Spin something you feel like was everywhere at one point.

This 1990 release was just as I was entering 8th Grade - so for the next 5 years this was the album that I couldn't escape from - and probably the #1 reason (of a very long list) that I'm not a fan of any country music of this era.

12/14 – A Christmas Story: Ralphie’s mom was so offended by the Leg Lamp / Major Award and what the neighbors would think that she ‘accidentally’ broke it. Play a record you suspect that your friends / family would ‘accidentally’ break, given the chance.

I've told the story of my dad purposefully taking a hammer to my brothers cassette of "Appetite For Destruction" - so pretty much anything would be up for an "accidental" breaking today if he were still alive.

The only band that I've heard my wife say she can't stand to listen to is Nirvana - because her boyfriend from 30+ years ago played Nevermind on repeat while they were dating. Back when we started dating she switched the station if we were in the car. I've listened to the album a few times over the years in her presence and it doesn't seem to be an issue now, but there was a time when there could have been some "accidental breakage".

I rarely play this pressing, so here it is...

It doesn't sound too bad, but I like the OG EU pressing just a bit more. There are A LOT of counterfeits of this and other Simply Vinyl releases to watch out for, though.

This is what came to my mind first...and I hadn't played in in quite some time.
