Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

Yea sharing music with others is like sharing a part of yourself. It’s hard not to feel rejected when they don’t like it. I went to a lot of concerts on my own in my 20’s because no one like the music I liked. I got over it. It’s part of why I’m so generous with other people’s ideas of what they like and don’t like.
I used to share more music with my wife, but then she hated a couple artists that were really important to me so I stopped. Now when I have new music she wonders why I don't share it with her. I don't think she takes is as personally if I don't like an artist.

I tend to enjoy music she shares with me (she is the woman who, when I met her talked about Einstürzende Neubauten shows, and now loves Maluma) but there is one artist that she plays that I just... hate. That Red House Painters guy, Mark K. I can't stand the sound of him.

Why do people think everything they like has to be liked by everyone else? I’m completely ok with people thinking two thirds of my record collection is weird useless music.
There's a running joke among my old college friends regarding my weird taste in music. My old roommate saw Angel Olsen's My Woman CD in my car. She looked at the cover and said, "This looks like Lauren music." I was unaware that I had a "look" for my music, but Angel Olsen is apparently my music "look".

My husband told me he has two categories for my records. One is "hella good stuff" and the other category is "noise". He was overly critical of my music for a while but lately, in his recent push to not be a jerk, he's been keeping negative opinions largely to himself.

I’m the same way with my girlfriend. We got along early on because of our shared love of The National, Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, other indie bands like that. She still really likes that kind of music but there’s a lot more stuff I’ve tried to get her into that she doesn’t like. I don’t take it personally and don’t get offended. It’s nice to have communities like N&G where we can share different tastes outside of our own personal lives too.

I know that I, as I've aged, have been even more drawn to noisy music, stuff that my wife may describe as agitating. If I put on Converge (who are my age, for crying out loud!) she's not happy with that.

But then she'll surprise me and enjoy something totally jarring that I play for her. I think she's lightened up in her vocal dislike of some of my faves. Ever since I bought that damn st vincent goldie guitar she's eased up a bit on her annoyance of Annie Clark's music, haha.
