Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

I forgot about pizza. Marcos or this local place by our house. There is a Pizza Hut a half a block by our house but we prefer Marcos.

Fun Fact: My second job ever was working at Pizza Hut. District manager said I was the best pizza maker in his district. Lots of free pizza at the ready came in handy during the party days. One night after a shift, me and a buddy went to the store manger’s house to buy some weed and he starts blasting Meatloaf’s Bat Out Of Hell trying to convince us that it was awesome and we just laughed at him and called him crazy.

If you live in upstate NY (where my in laws are) there is a place called Mark's that is fantastic as far a Pizza chains go.
I work in NYC and live in NJ so I dont do chain pizza usually - but I make an exception for Mark's

Indian is my absolute favourite takeaway food. But I’d doubt much of that is gf either. Certainly not what I’m ordering with all the naans lol! Like a pizza too but it’s got to be a proper Italian style one, just can’t do the domino’s or Pizza Hut style ones, give me heartburn and the sight of all that grease running off them…

Italian or seafood is probably my favourite restaurant food. One thing with living on a little island is that we have lots of very good seafood!

I do like a burrito but randomly lots of little local places sprung up selling Mexican food before any of the chains made it over. I’m not sure it’s 100% authentic but it sure tastes good!

I have a friend that grew up in Bolton. He has that British love of Indian food. I love it too, but it’s so expensive over here. It must be cheaper over there.

I know, I know. I was just saying if given the option between a tin of beans on some bread or a couple of taco supremes from a drive-thru, I think I'd take the tacos.

I think we all agree that a small business does it better, or we'd rather cook ourselves.

Better yet. Street tacos! Or I just call them Street meat. These places are all over LA. They have one place out where I live in the burbs. I have yet to check it out.

Yeah it’s hugely abundant because of the amount of immigration from India, Pakistan and, in particular for chefs, Bangladesh. Like anything there’s a range from cheap to expensive but for something nice that’s still takeaway or night out food it’s definitely more expensive than most other cuisines, but not prohibitively so.

Same here with Pizza. The Pac NW has deficit (when compared with the Northeastern and Midwest) when it come to quality Italian pizza parlor type places. We have a few but for some reason, for pizza to be considered good out here it has to be wood fired and have like artichoke hearts and arugula on it. I am not saying this types of pies are bad, but they are not what I crave when I want pizza.

Also, I enjoy New York style but for me, my favorite pizza sub category or is St. Louis/Tavern Style. It’s pizza on a crispy cracker like dough. It was popular back in Central IL. Most bars would buy these frozen pizzas from a place called Butches Pizza and have a little table top pizza oven where you would order one and they would cut it in a grid so it was easier to share/snack on.

Out here, we found one place, The Cloverleaf that comes pretty close to that. They cut theirs like a traditional pizza but other than that it’s usually nice and crispy.
Man I didn’t realize the amount of pizza places in the North East. I was home a lot over the summer and previous year with my mother’s sickness and death. It seems like the only quick food option.

If you need space for your dogs there's always New Jersey. Sure, it lacks the convenience, excitement, culture, cache, restaurants, entertainment, and grittiness of NYC, but it does have parks. And if you work in the city you can enjoy Penn Station TWICE per day!

This is bullshit.
NJ rules and as a previously reluctant transplant I’m here to beat back the tired narrative and the NYC snobbery. Yes NYC is the center of the Universe, but fuck off with the nose in the air contempt.

Here’s your excitement, culture, cache and entertainment:
  • Trey Anastacio
  • Count Basie
  • George Clinton
  • Glenn Danzig
  • Debbie Harry
  • Lauren Hill
  • Whitney Houston
  • Zakk Wilde
  • Ice-T
  • The Shirelles
  • Paul Simon
  • Frank Fucking Sinatra
  • Patti Smith
  • Toni Bennett
All NJ natives.

Convenience is vastly overrated and bred McDonalds and every other piece of shite that makes up the “‘Murica” branding our country should be ashamed of.

Grittiness?? NYCs version died in 90s - it’s Disneyworld for the wealthy now.

You want gritty - come to a show in Newark.

You wanna eat? Here’s just a few some options:

NJ legalized before NY and has better Bagels, Beaches and Casinos too.
GTFO here with the NJ sucks Bullshit.

Well, NJ sucks. But not because it stands in the shadow of NYC. NJ earned earned it's suckiness sui generis.

Signed,
Connecticut

(I kid - most of my father's side is in NJ and it's fine)

Seriously though, I feel this. Tacoma is the “New Jersey” to Seattle’s “NYC”. Lots of cliched takes about how low class, dangerous, and smelly (Tacoma-aroma) Tacoma is from folks that haven’t been down here for like 30 years. Tacoma isn’t without its flaws but it’s not a dumpster fire that many up north think it is either.

The only time I ever performed in Tacoma the gig sucked, but I don't blame Tacoma itself for that. I generally didn't mind my 24 hours or so there.

What does Tacoma smell like and what's the source?
It’s got it’s own Wikipedia page…
Thankfully the city got it (mostly) under control prior to us moving here but there are some pulp mills along with some other manufacturing by the port that can smell absolutely horrid if the wind conditions are right. Like farts mixed with wet newspaper.

My friend has a song called "Smells Like Quesnel" about a town in BC's interior that suffers from similar issues with their pulp and paper mills smells.
