Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

the disintegration loops is boring and exhausting... i get how people are emotionally attached to the 9/11 backstory and the pretty imagery. but it loops so much its honestly exhausting and I mostly just want it to end... same issue I have with everywhere at the end of time so that's 2 ambient masterpieces I don't like (I swear I like ambient music I just like a certain kind)

I don't think I've ever actively listened to The Disintegration Loops and only have ever listened to the whole project through once or twice. I like to chunk up it into different pieces and listen to it while working or reading. Plus I used to sleep to music years ago and 1/1 was a popular piece I'd let play as I fell asleep. Basically, if you are only just listening to it and doing nothing else, then yeah... I would get bored pretty easily too.

It's great rainy day napping music. And that's not a knock on it - like it puts you to sleep. But its repetitive nature let's it sink into the background of the room but also occupy a sensory foreground. It's comforting to wake up in the familiarity that is also slightly eschew from when you left it. I don't care an ounce about the 9/11 mythologizing. I do think it is a great work of music.

also a love supreme is only pretty good... i get why people like it... but I don't see why its considered the greatest jazz album ever.. honestly i'd say kamasi washingtons epic is a better album (at least when I separate it by CD)
I personally struggle with this album but in a very different way. I don't get it's reverence as a spiritual experience. It does nothing for my soul... Charles Kynard affects me in a more spiritual way. If I want jazz to move me closer to that plane, I'm more likely to listen to Alice or 70's Henderson or even Kamasi.

I get it's stature and the technical prowess. I'm just not affected by it.

Minimalism still has to keep your attention. Just put on Music For Airports and feel good about yourself.

yeah for something people have called such a "spiritual" experience it just feels like a lot of really good musicians recording some really good jazz... and that's not a bad thing.. in fact for what it is its at the very much a 7 or 8 album... but calling it the greatest jazz album ever and a deep mind changing piece is just not something I can get behind

I kinda don't get why people love daydream nation by sonic youth so much.. maybe I just recorded more aggression or just 20 more teen age riots but the rest of the songs just never hit for me, they were just kinda discordant punk songs, in interested in trying other albums from them like goo and washing machine though

I think Daydream Nation was more of the exception, not the rule for Sonic Youth. Most of their other stuff is not as "friendly" to listen to than that album. Although there are some exceptions, EVOL is a nicer listen, less aggresive, but the back half still packs a punch. Their last two albums before break-up had slightly more pop sensibilities. As for DN think the flow is phenomenal from song to song, if you cut "Providence" it would be a flawless album IMO but that track does have some charm. It's pound for pound their best album, no skips.

Also, I don't know if I'd consider SY a punk band tbh. They're more of an Experimental Alt Rock band with background in the No Wave and Noise scenes who sometimes make nicer sounding music. They're very discordant, like you said. But that's what you get with them. "Teenage Riot", "Kool Thing" "Incinerate" are more rare for them even though those songs are very popular.

They definitely started punk and went more art. Any band that is around that long not named AC/DC has to evolve.

Idk if I'd call it punk. It's like noise rock. Their first album is more similar to Swans than it is Ramones or The Clash. It's very abrasive. But I don't want to get into a genre debate. I agree that they evolved their sound tremendously. Their first album sounds nothing like their later work.

@wokeupnew why the anger. It’s wasn’t aimed at any band in particular it’s just the way things go with long lasting bands, they evolve or else they eventually keep releasing increasingly less interesting versions of the same thing,
I wouldn’t have said “boring”. bands change sound but it’s isn’t always in a way that makes them boring. Sometimes it’s better, sometimes it’s worse.

No doubt changing sound is a risk and it can backfire but over a long career it’s a necessary risk. Ploughing the the same furrow rarely leads to positive results in the longer term.
