Hot Take/ Musical Confession Thread!

Here's another for you @Joe Mac R.E.M.'s total body of work blow the Beattles away, and it's not even close.

I mean I like R.E.M. but they’re not even close to being in the same sport as The Beatles, never mind the same league. No one is going to be debating how R.E.M. changed the face of popular music in 50 years time.

Here’s my R.E.M. hot take. Their major label career on Warners pales into insignificance when compared with their first five albums.

Meh. Life’s Rich Pageant and Out of Time are the only essential albums.

Agreed on both counts but you're forgetting Reckoning and Automatic For The People.
Murmur, Reckoning, Lifes Rich Pageant, and Automatic For the People are the only essential REM albums. Green has some great tracks (Orange Crush, World Leader Pretend, Untitled) and some crap (Stand, Hairshirt). Out of Time is the same, but with fewer great tracks, and more crap.

Edit to add: Document belongs in the essential list.

This thread always makes me ponder the age/exposure context of those voicing certain opinions.

I don’t know what that means...

And 36. I was 28 before I liked R.E.M. tbh because whilst their Warner stuff has moments it can be a bit overbearing, Ernest and at times dull. Someone gave me a copy of eponymous then and it was like discovering a whole new band that I liked an awful lot more....
