Immerse Your Soul In Love - The Radiohead Thread

Did you manage to avoid the distortion of How To Disappear Completely? The strings and vocals distort really bad on my copy!

If you do I’m more hopeful of a good copy from the repress then because I know you have a nice system that’s not a million miles removed from my own!
Well now I need to get it back out and focus on that part! But I didn't notice as a casual listen.

Yeah at the end of the song as it comes to a crescendo it distorts pretty badly on my copy! Sounds a bit like the clipping you used to get on tracks with high notes back in the Napster days when you’d compress an mp3 ridiculous amounts to get it to fit on a little sd card player.

Yup. I have the red pressing and it’s the same on mine. I think it’s a ‘mastering issue.

That was my feeling too although I’ve also seen it posited that it could come from inner groove distortion on a bad pressing. It does seem to widespread to be that though.
Yeah my initial thought was inner groove distortion, especially with the smaller labels but wouldn’t you also get more sibilance throughout the track if it were inner groove distortion though? Not just on essentially hottest part of the track?

I cranked it up and only noticed one little spot where the high note was a little warbly, sounded pretty good to these ears.

Seller is going to take back "phenomenal" "terrific" Kid A OG that is basically a G record. So... now what... Do I try again or admit defeat. The mastering IS very nice on the OG. I can definitely hear a difference.
From my experience, if a seller of vinyl records isn't familiar with the Goldmine standards for grading, it's probably best to just avoid them. I've made the same mistake with a few eBay buys.

I own a lot of Radiohead on vinyl, and I've come to accept that (in general) it sounds pretty mediocre. Granted, I only have US pressings, and some of the older Capitol pressings. I haven't chased any Parlophones or first pressings, because pristine vinyl pressings for this band is just a costly struggle.

I'd say you should be able to track down some higher-rez 24 bit lossless files for their releases, at least the most recent albums. Otherwise, I'd recommend just getting the Kid A CD. The digital format is perfect for that album, and frankly sounds quite good.

Yeah I pretty much agree with everything you say here. I have Tidal and it's got I think the CD quality stream of it. So outside of a high res download, that's probably my best bet.

I've found CDs to be surprisingly refreshing as of late. No anxiety or annoyance associated with all the vinyl pressing delays and defects, especially after dropping $50+ on an album. I have too many, "why do i bother?" moments with records these days, with the warps, off-center pressings, and other nonsense. Hell, I just dropped $60 on an AP pressing of Ben Webster and a tiny fragment of trim remained in the inner sleeve, leading to a long hairline. I put the album on and all I could focus on was that rotational click, click, click, click. If it was a $10 record, that's no bother. But here I am fetishizing over larger plastic discs and big artwork. So, why do I bother? Been going to live shows for 25 years, have some form of hearing damage (no earplugs at all those punk/metal shows), and yet I'm still chasing that "perfect" sound. Ha ha.

I have that same Webster pressing and after I read your comment a while back I've been afraid to open it. This is fun right?

I remember buying that Fight Club OST from Mondo and trying to figure out how to open the jacket without destroying it. I pulled up the glued flap, which had printed underneath "stop trying to control everything and just let go". Best free therapy available for record collectors. ;)

I bought that pressing just for the packaging and did the same exact thing and then laughed my ass off. That record jacket sees me more thoroughly than any therapist ever could.

I actually SACRIFICE>'d with glee, and play the thing quite a bit.
