It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

I cannot wait for football to be back tomorrow. Absolutely loathe the international breaks.

Was really looking forward to watching some Bayern games specially to see if the Müller record would topple. Unfortunately Lewandowski hurt his ankle for Poland and is out for 4 weeks so that puts the record in jeopardy. I really wanted to see him break it. 40 goals in one season seems impossible with a shorter 32 game season but Lewy could do it. He got a hat trick in the last Bayern game (while being down to 10 men) and is sitting at 35 with 8 games, now most likely 4 for him remaining. It’s definitely doable but would be very impressive to come back from injury and pass it.

It’d be more impressive if there was even the remotest possibility of someone else winning the title. You can only really judge himself and Bayern in Europe because the Bundesliga is a done deal before the season feigns.

I mean you’re probably right, but Leipzig play Bayern tomorrow and are 4 points behind them with Lewandowski missing. If there’s a time for Bayern to not win the league it’s tomorrow. If Bayern still win then it’s over.

Bayern will win, as much because Caffeine FC will bottle it. That league is, like France since the oil money lined, cursed to a life of predictably.

PSG are tied with Lille and they have Poch who hasn’t won anything. Historically yes, but it’s not even close to being over yet.

PSGs multi millionaire players get bored every 2 to 3 years no matter how good the boss is. They need a fresh voice. Tuchel is a top boss, as shown by Chelsea’s revival, but Neymar et al had heard enough from him. Of late they’ve improved and they’ll win the league 4 out of 5 years, if this is the Monaco year so be it but I don’t see an Mbappe at Lille. Poch hadn’t won a trophy before because he hadn’t had the support to built and reinforce a squad to win a trophy before.

Aside from who will win, these are still very entertaining leagues to watch. Out of all 3, the PL has been wrapped up with a bow for 2 months now, but we’re still watching it. Bundesliga is very entertaining and exciting. I’ve heard someone mention “it’s like every team plays with a shot clock” which I can’t not think of when watching a game, Bayern or not. It makes perfect sense for the style of play. Just because the title is predictable doesn’t mean there’s not good football to be had.

Maybe I’ve been spoiled down the yesrs but unless you support a team involved
In a match sport without jeopardy is irrelevant

Watching Sam Allerdyce sit there after goal 5 with his legs crossed and a little bit of that old white man calf showing is the smug vibe today needed. Watching Chelsea crumble at home to a bottom 3 (even if it was with just 10 for 60) was just the icing on the cake.

Now if Leeds can get a win at home in a match they definitely should the day will be made.

Alerdichio has perfected the look of smug throughout his career. I have a particular fondness for smug Bolton Sam v Wenger’s Arsenal.

Leeds are cutting through Sheffield United so far. If their finishing is on point this could get very messy.

Callum Robinson has 5 Premier League goals in 2 seasons. All of them against Chelsea.

A reminder that I said this. Based on zero science, stats, experience or anything (kinda like republicans).
Looks like that may be a good pick. I'm sad Bayern has had so many injuries because Lewandowski could have easily scored 4 in the game had he not gotten injured. They created a ridiculous number of chances but couldn't finish.

My brother got so mad at me when I predicted PSG. I then made the mistake of asking if he noticed the score at halftime. He said it wouldn't stand. I then, of course, had to make sure he saw the final score.

He's still not speaking to me.

XG is just evil and wrong

OK, I've become somewhat more versed in football over the last year. I still need someone to talk all things women's (gasp, they have women's football??) with me. Chelsea is looking pretty darn unstoppable. It's going to be Chelsea and Barca in the finals

My pick for men's Champion's League: PSG. I don't know why, I just felt it. I'm pleased Juventus is out. I am not a ronaldo fan.

I'm also still trying to figure out my teams. I'm thinking Napoli. But please tell me all the problematic things about them so i can make an informed decision.
It's funny because I have been inadvertently following Chelsea women's team. MSNBC Sports and NBC will air women's games sometimes and I've set them to record. NBC really, really likes the Chelsea women's team so I get a bunch of their games. They look basically unstoppable. I caught the most recent Chelsea United game and it was a good contest (and a draw). I still haven't gotten peacock because we are weighing our options and thinking of cutting cable now that they are (currently) installing fiber in my neighborhood.

One good fall out of there being less college (American) football games is that they had space to fill and started putting women's soccer in the rotation. I really hope they keep promoting women's sports, because it's been delightful to watch the women play.

NBC has had a lot of that league! Mostly Man City, Man United and Chelsea. Man City and Man United because of LaVelle, Mewis, Dahlkemper, Press and Heath. And Chelsea because they are on top. Chelsea has been so good. Man City and Arsenal are also playing super well. Man United is really missing Tobin and have not played well the last few weeks.

You can find the women's games streaming on The FA Player, Wnited or ATA football. I am usually spending a bit of time on Fridays mapping out the games for the weekend and where I can watch. USWNT plays Sweden tomorrow at 1 on Fox. The NWSL starts tonight too with the Challenge Cup - stinks that they started during a FIFA window but not hugely surprising given how shitty the US is to the USWNT. But I think those games are also on Fox?

It has its faults but it's a good predictor of how a team performs, It's not science and sometimes inaccurate.

In that match, Bayern had something like 30 chances and 12 shots on target but they all could have been low xG chances. So each individual chance had an average xG of let's say 0.25 which you don't expect to always score from. But in total, they all add up to 4~. However tons of low chance shots =/= 4 goals unless you're missing an elite finisher in Lewandowski. Paris had 5 shots on target where each could have been a more clear cut chance on average compared to Bayern's chances. I don't know the specifics of each chance but in an instance like that, and most likely this game because Bayern only had one or two very clear chances, Muller's header and Muller's miss. Here it could be flawed with numerous low xG chances but it does help to gauge how many of those chances they should be converting. Navas also played out of his skin which hurt Bayern obviously.

I disagree. It’s incapable of doing that.

Attempts to bring statistical analysis into a spontaneous sport is hateful. You’ve your own over tactical sports for that kind of nonsense.

It gives you an impression on how a team creates chances. Bayern should have done better because they created more goal scoring opportunities. It does not account for goalkeeping, good finishing, or poor finishing. In that paragraph I even mentioned how it could be flawed because Bayern created not many high probability of scoring chances. I explained how it's flawed. LMAO on it being hateful. It's just a stat. It doesn't assign victory to the team after the game. It's just a stat. Same way that City will taught their high possession but lose 2-0 to Spurs, Wolves, Leicester, whoever. It's just a stat don't take it too seriously.

It’s unnecessary unbearable extraneous noise. It has little relationship to any matches I’ve ever watched either.
