Day 8: “She was an unknown legend in her time”

James Blackshaw - Holly EP

I play this artist all the time but he's not very popular -- unfortunately, he hung up the skates a few years ago. Blackshaw is an English guitarist who mostly plays long, meandering compositions on 12-string, though this album and the full-length that followed are primarily played on 6-string classical guitar with some piano. He's made some of the most beautiful music I've heard in my life, including the two pieces here.

Day 11: “The Bridge, we’ll build it now” – play an album by someone who performed at the Bridge Benefit over the years

Neil's backing band on this record has played the Bridge Benefit a few times...

Neil Young - Mirror Ball
Day 11: "The Bridge, we'll build it now" - play an album by someone who performed at the Bridge Benefit over the years

Bringing out the big gun early! I figured you'd have that teed up for the 31st!

Pearl Jam played the first Bridge Benefit I went to (in 2014). Got to finally catch a Mirrorball song live (Throw Your Hatred Down) with Neil & PJ. The full lineup was Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Brian Wilson, Florence & The Machine, Soundgarden, Norah Jones & Puss n Boots, Band of Horses, and Pegi Young & the Survivors. An incredible lineup - got to see what turned out to be the last time that Eddie & Chris Cornell performed Hunger Strike as well. Went the following two years but nothing lived up to that first year.

Bridge concerts were incredibly special, in no small part to the reason for the benefit, the Bridge School and the incredible work they do.

Among all the highlights of 2014, Florence & The Machine may have been the biggest surprise. I was familiar with her, but hadn't seen her live. She brought a stripped down band (2 or 3 musicians) and filled the venue with her voice alone. One of the best vocal performances I've ever seen, and haven't missed her since.

Dave and Tim have played The Bridge School Benefit on multiple occasions. In fact Matthews, Neil’s fellow Farm Aid board of director; has played several more times either solo or with his full band.

In addition to committing to all Neil Young posts this month, I also committed to not playing the obvious whenever possible.
