January 2021 Challenge Thread - It's All One Song! And One Raffle!

Day 12: “Live Music is Better, bumper stickers should be issued” – Play a live album.

I saw this tour in Chapel Hill, NC on 2-28-91. The running theme of the 1991 jaunt - the US is involved in a fabricated, unjust war. Neil was plenty pissed about it.

This show happened to be on the night the Iraq War was 'declared' over. Mission Accomplished and all that. This only seemed to infuriate Neil even more. He expressed that through the music. The bombast commenced at the opening note and lasted until Neil and Crazy horse walked off the stage. It was an incredible aural assault. And it was absolutely beautiful.

This was a sweet triple bill that included Sonic Youth and Social Distortion as the openers. SY and Social D came out and did what we all want SY and Social D to do. There was a couple with their young kids seated behind me. They managed to weather the SY/SD storm and told their kids Neil was gonna come out and play 'Heart Of Gold' and 'Lotta Love' and it was gonna be a mellow good time. Whoops - guess they didn't do their research. They didn't hang in too long.

I was in the 5th row, slightly left of center on Poncho's side. I managed to tape the show on the down low. It came out quite listenable. A link to my recording of 'Cortez The Killer' below. Enjoy and pass it on.

Outside of the Dave Matthews Band (which I’ve seen live over a dozen times) The National are probably the band I have seen the most live ( Twice at Pitchfork Music Festival in 2006 and 2009 respectively, once opening for Arcade Fire at the UIC Pavilion in 2011, and twice as headliners. In 2017 at The Paramount Theatre and in 2019 at Marymoore Park). I also have 3 of The National’s live albums and this a RSD release recorded live at The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA September 24-25, 2018 using the “The Mike Millard Method" see the mini-doc below for a good descriptor of what that entails. While it’s recorded well, this is one of those instance that I wish I had a Tape Deck as part of my main set up as my little boom box just can’t crank loud enough to achieve pure bliss.

My wife and I took the kids to see the National for the second of those two shows in Berkeley. To this day, my son (then 6, now 8) will randomly start singing "light years, light years away" now and then, which was the song they opened with.

Day 5: “Old enough now to change your name” – Play something by someone who uses a stage name.

Lux Interior (Erick Purkhiser)
Poison Ivy (Kristy Wallace)
Bryan Gregory (Greg Beckerleg)
Nick Knox (Nick Stephanoff)

Day 5 - Change Your Name
The Cramps - Gravest Hits

Believe it, or not, Lux Interior, Poison Ivy Rorschach, Nick Knox, and Bryan Gregory are not their given names. Human Fly is a perfect song, for me.

Nina Simone — A Very Rare Evening

It snowed in Mississippi yesterday (something I did NOT think I had to deal with when I moved here) and so “Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles/ With frozen faces to keep love away” hits a little differently today.
