Jazz

PDX Jazz member, you save $5 off each ticket and get early access. The discount applies all year, including the Sons of Kemet show at Star Theater. I'll be seeing Makaya Saturday night, and let's be honest, probably Sunday too.
Cool, I was thinking I would join. Gonna try and figure out the schedule tomorrow.

James Brandon Lewis is rapidly becoming my favourite jazz musician so I'd definitely check him out. So good, and can play with such variety (last week I saw him play a duo with piano and with a string Quartet too; his recent albums were quartets and a quintet with cello and cornet). He can't get enough love in my book.

Gary Bartz might be worth a look, Lakecia Benjamin and James Brandon Lewis as well.

James Brandon Lewis would 100% be on my list, but I've unfortunately got a conflict that night. Not familiar with Lakecia Benjamin, will give a listen, and thanks!

It's always a tough week to make shows for me. It's Presidents Day weekend, and my kid has a volleyball tourney about an hour away each day. And a bunch of weekday shows too, and then mixing in a Hiss Golden Messenger show that week. Hoping the world is still in good enough shape that all these shows happen. Really want to get to Makaya and Ron Carter. Maybe Angel Bat Dawid, Brandee Younger and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah too. If I wasn't already taking a week off in January and two weeks in March I'd just take it off and go nuts.

I flew up to Seattle to see Zorn’s Electric Masada ages ago. Now I got a kid. Those weekends won’t happen.

I think I posted about PM records the other day. They found a bunch of old new stock so I picked up a few albums from their website. Got an OG of Elvin Jones On The Mountain that was still sealed, a japanese mono pressing of Nina Simone - A Very Rare Evening that was still sealed and an OG sealed copy of Don Thompson Country Place. Really pleasantly surprised by it. Cleaned On The Mountain and it's a really nice pressing -- done at Sterling. Dead quiet. Cleaning the others but excited for those too.

I just went through and updated the Jazz Reissues (+Few New Releases) spreadsheet. I think I counted more than 35 delays, changes and outright "We Have No Idea - So How About TBD" by the labels. 🤷‍♂️

Throw in increased demand, no open presses and shortages of anything from paper to plastics and It ain't pretty out there for jazz vinyl fans.

because they want preorders I think Paul then things get screwy with pressing and printing schedules. Read recently on another board there is now a large cardboard shortage for printing covers (Staughton).

Thought I would share a non-vinyl release on this rare occasion. I have been really enjoying Teodross Avery's music ever since I bought a copy of After The Rain: A Night For Coltrane (which is available on vinyl) on @Mr Moore's recommendation a while ago. This one follows that with a tribute to Thelonious Monk. It's really fantastic but not available on vinyl, unfortunately.

thanks @Selaws , streaming this at work now. Nice session, good lineup too:)

Did anyone pick up the RSD-BF Miles Davis Live-Evil? Would love to hear any comments on the quality of the mastering and pressing. Was contemplating an upgrade from my beat-up garage sale copy, but then noticed it was pressed at United and held off.

well there goes all my money.....AP is supposedly repressing the entire prestige AP series they did. i didn't watch it but apparently Chad says it in the CAGE MATCH between Fremer and Mikefromtheingroovephoenixarizona

Will it be part of the next AS series, or will it be AP? Not that it makes a big difference, except the format (33 vs 45).

scrubbing through some of this cage match. don't care about either of the mikes but there are some interesting other tidbits. looks like they might do a 45RPM UHQR of Love Supreme cut by RKS. I bet he cut it at 45 when he did the AS series too.
