Jazz

A few were cutouts but still sealed, and I had read about the hole punch before which is kinda cool! It also has a rubber stamp on the back saying "Inspected by No. 1 RS" which I hadn't seen before...Just surprised it was still priced so low being an OG mono. The laminate on the sleeve and everything is in great shape.

When I was in London in August I was at SOTU and torn between the reissues of Dusk Fire and Shades of Blue. Ended up getting Shades of Blue but wished I had gotten both. Dusk Fire has been hard to find and they had it for $25 sealed so it was an instant grab for me.

I'm really curious how much used stuff they don't even have out on the floor. The cabinets under the flip bins all say "do not open" but I couldn't help but peak last time. It was full of insane records that weren't even priced yet.

The first time I was at the shop I was really confused because there were lots of empty jackets listed at $30+. Took me a minute to realize that anything opened and over $30 has the vinyl stored separately behind the register while the sleeve is out in the bins. They also write down what you buy on a huge legal pad of paper to keep track of inventory and have an old little calculator with a receipt printer to tally everything up.
I would love to hear your thoughts on Dusk Fire and Shades Of Blue once you listen to them.

Personally, I like the music on Dusk Fire more. It marked the arrival of Michael Garrick to the group and his compositions and playing really gave them the edge in my opinion. Not to say Shades isn't great though as it really is.

Funnily enough, I ordered the Jazzman reissue of Shades last week to complete the set (can't see myself getting an OG anytime soon haha) and I expect it to arrive tomorrow. As it happens, @avecigrec has one on the way too, so there must be something in the water!!!

In terms of rarity when it comes to the OG's I think Shades has the edge because it was released in such low numbers. There's an interview with Don Rendell and Michael Garrick and they say that 1000 copies of shades were pressed (not sold - thats the real figure I would love to know.). In comparison, Garrick said his best selling was Heart Of A Lotus which sold 1200.

I've got all of the Jazzman reissues of these albums – jumped on them as soon as they were announced after missing the box set – and while they're all good, I would agree that Dusk Fire is the best of the bunch, with Shades coming in a close second.

And aside from the quality of the music itself, Jazzman did an exceptional job with their reissues. If I ever stumbled across an affordable copy of any these albums, I wouldn't shy away from buying them, but as it stands, I'm perfectly satisfied having the copies I have.
Fantastic!

I have a strange history with these albums. When the box set was first announced they sold out pretty quickly. Almost a year later and a shop in London found a forgotten box in their warehouse and listed it below the original rrp, so I bought it. I was so excited that I posted about it on my Instagram story and someone offered me 4 times what I paid (which I just couldn't pass up!) so I sold it on to them. I kind of regretted it BUT since then I was able to get original pressings of all by Shades, so all came out fantastically in the end.

That's crazy that someone wanted it so desperately that they immediately offered you that much, but I guess it ultimately worked out in your favor.

It's also a little weird to think that there are now more copies of the reissues than the originals, but really, I'm just happy these records – along with the Tubby Hayes box and the handful of British Jazz Explosion releases from Decca – have made it back out into the world.
Yeah, it was really unexpected and just too much to pass on.

It's really great that they are getting these reissues as the music is fantastic and well deserving of being more readily available. The Tubby Hayes Fontana set you mentioned is a prime example of a reissue done right. I have the Don Rendell 'Space Walk' from the more recent British Jazz Explosion series and thats killer as well. The real shame is that there are dozens of albums that won't likely get reissued because the tapes were destroyed to make space, primarily those on the Tempo Label. I suppose a needle drop could be done but even then im not sure how many really clean copies exist anymore.

Did I somehow miss this announcement?

AAA RKS cut

I haven’t been playing close attention, but Fremer announced the remaining AS titles for this year.

Made me wonder what’s going to be in the VMP Impulse box

not seen this guy's videos before, but spotted this which has an interview with Fred in the Sam Records shop.

Great stuff, Fred seems like a really humble guy especially considering how much of the process he takes on himself.

Such a killer shop as well, with so many great reissues and what looks to be originals as well.

Sounds like we are due for a Donald Byrd studio session by the end of the year which is exciting. Can anyone catch which artist he mentions at 15:05?

I thought he said Mal Waldron, but couldn't really hear, don't know if I was making that up.

edit - I thought what the guy said after was interesting as well, a bit vague but talked about potentially a new pressing plant or maybe improving the quality of the vinyl

Anybody know what this is about?

I have their Steve Kuhn reissue and like it. They have some really cool releases of albums I hadn't heard of before and would definitely pick some up on sale.

This is interesting. Leon Brichard of Ill Considered/Wildflower posted the other day about a new project he is working on with Satin Singh, Oli Savill and Leon Stenning titled "SOLL". The 2 tracks currently up sound fantastic and they put up a first pressing run of just 200. Looks like they sold out as they took the listing off and replaced it with a digital stream/download option.
