June 2020 Record Challenge Thread (The RAFFLE continues!)

Saturday (20) – Covid Record Store Day – play an RSD release or an artist that you would’ve supported today

There have been some great Lou Reed releases over the last few RSDs. On deck we have a 2LP treatment of the Lou Reed / John Cale collaboration Songs For Drella. That one will be coming home to roost with my copy of the original.

This one was released a few RSDs ago. It sounds spectacular and can be had on the relative cheap so go ahead and pick it up.

Day 20: RSD

ugh...I forgot today was RSD I see it isn't "RSD" today, but some stores are doing a #LOVERECORDSTORES type thing - but this looks to be more of a UK thing - since it was postponed/cancelled/split-up I really didn't follow what was coming out when.

There were a couple releases I was looking out for, but forgot what those were.

I don't even know what is being released today, or what my local store is doing for it. I think they kinda opened, but I don't know if they opened enough to even try to go without standing in a line for hours. Usually there's 50+ people in the rather small store on RSD.

This album is one I was waiting for a reissue ever since I got into collecting records...

Day (18) – Hype up an *artist* that created some art for a band you love.
Katerina Jebb, for the artwork of Tori Amos' From The Choirgirl Hotel

I've told a bunch of times the story of this album. It was my birthday, I went to a record store with some money and bought Portishead's Dummy. Had some more money and found this album that was kinda cheap and the cover image was completely hypnotizing. Bought it without knowing who the artists was or what it sounded like. It changed my life.
Jebb is a British photographer who also works with scanners. IIRC, she used to work with a huge scanner, and now she is using a regular one and applies some collage techniques. Anyway, her works is still so mesmerizing.
I'll put some of her works under spoilers, but you should definitely Google her.

Day 20 - RSD

Miles Davis - Early Minor

Hope I'm not pre-empting @Selaws again but this is one of the few RSD titles I have as I'm not a fan of the atmosphere in my local, which goes from friendly and cosy to everyone having their sharp elbows out. Still this was a great release and am looking forward to the Bitches Brew outtakes later this year too.

Day 18: Another Work of ART!! (Playing catch-up)

Wild Style

One of the most important movies for “hip-hop culture” I wore out my VHS copy of this and Style Wars back in the day. Such amazing artwork lost to time and bullshit politics but thankfully there were a handful of people documenting as much as possible! The Wild Style logo was inspired by a piece by an artist named DONDI and was designed by an artist named Zephyr I highly recommend going down the graffiti rabbit hole!

Day 19 – Ecstasy - play something that makes you wanna love everyone

Calvin Harris - Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 (Sony, 2017 First Signed Pressing)

I think this fits the description? Its a super uplifting summery album and one which I haven't listened to for years until I recently found it on the shelf.

Day 20 - Covid Record Store Day – play an RSD release or an artist that you would’ve supported today

The Rugged Nuggets / Smoke DZA, Fly Anakin & Blu - Head Above Water

This is the type of release I love that RSD brings about, a collab between two unrelated labels Colemine and Coalmine. Colemine, the funk/soul label from Ohio, had The Rugged Nuggets record a funky instrumental track (Cole Side). Then Coalmine, the hip-hop label from Brooklyn, had their go to producer sample the song and some of their artists rap over the track (Coal Side). I'm all over anything like this on RSD and love this one!

Bill Evans - Live At Art D'Lugoff's Top Of The Gate (Resonance Records, 2019 RSD Pressing)

While I had a bit of a nightmare with Resonance yesterday (they sent me the same record twice rather than disc 1 & 2) they emailed late last night to apologise and to let me know they would send a replacement once USPS deliver to the UK (They has supposedly stopped international shipping during COVID-19). This was the first RSD release I picked up by Resonance and I have become hooked. The music is almost always unreleased live sessions, with an in-depth booklet and great sounding vinyl. Well worth looking into, they are pricey but worth the money in my opinion!

Pavement - Live Europaturnén MCMXCVII
8EAA6366-07BC-4655-A3C6-3756B35E7AC7.jpeg

Limited release of 95 hand-numbered copies on red vinyl. Live Europaturnén MCMXCVII is a live album by Pavement, which was recorded at a concert in Cologne, Germany on August 15, 1997. The vinyl-only album was released as part of Record Store Day 2009. Although the record is a Matador Records release, it has no mention of a record label of any type anywhere on the album or sleeve. And though the album was recorded in Germany, all of the text on the back cover and labels is printed in Spanish. Very Pavement.
