Movies

Dunkirk is really good but it’s not great for watching passively, the first time I watched it I had to keep rewinding because I would be doing other things and would miss moments that would make things confusing. Once I committed to putting away other distractions and giving the film my complete attention I really enjoyed the experience.
That was definitely my problem. I think the short(er) runtime tricked me into passive watching and I forgot this is Nolan we’re talking about. I followed along with the online plot but it was too late. My problem was going into it ready for a traditional war film.

Yeah, it's more impressionistic than a lot of war films. The narrative is divided into three temporalities:

The Land (takes place over one week)
The Sea (takes place over one day)
The Sky (takes place over one hour)

And at the point of the sea bombing, all three timelines converge on a single moment, and then diverge again.

imo, it has some of Nolan's most memorable imagery. Also Tom Hardy giving an absolutely top-tier eye-acting performance.

Just got out of Oppenheimer, and I say this as someone who has been sour on him the better part of the last decade, but this will probably end up the crowning achievement of Nolan's career.
Dang, I think it slots in below average for his filmography.

I know Nolan loves the melodramatic but it just didn't work for a lot of these scenes, particularly the interrogation scenes. Can we stop trying to make every word feel like the greatest utterance of mankind? The score was exhausting.

I think everything he's done between Inception and this ranges from alright to bad, so OP felt like a step up.

Agreed with the dialogue, but I enjoyed it here for some reason. It felt, idk, more grounded and less goofy. These are all genius and somewhat arrogant characters after all.

I haven’t rated Nolan’s movies on Letterboxd, but here’s what I’ve got for IMDb

10: Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar

9: The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises (I feel these are where his goofy dialogue was most distracting)

8 (Need to revisit): Batman Begins, Insomnia

7: Tenet

6: Dunkirk

Haven’t seen Following, seeing Heimer tomorrow

I thought the physicists' discussions were the best part of the movie. Maybe the atomic visuals. But Robert Downey's character and the entire interrogation was just painful. For all it's faults, The Aviator handled a similar topic far better imo.

I feel like my Nolan rankings are kinda weird:

1) The Prestige
2) Dunkirk
3) The Dark Knight
4) Memento
5) Batman Begins
6) Interstellar (need to rewatch, only saw it once in theaters and I was sitting in a front corner seat at a full-fat IMAX theater)
7) Inception (never really cared for this one, feels like Paprika but not as good)
8) Tenet
9) The Dark Knight Rises

i am definitely excited to see oppenheimer but there is the one scene in a few of the trailers where matt damon says 'why?! how about because this is the MoSt ImPoRtAnT tHiNg To EvEr HaPpEn In ThE hIsToRy Of ThE wOrLd!!!' that utterly tempers that excitement every time i see it. unless nolan is subverting expectations here i am assuming it is being said with 100% sincerity and it's just sooo corny in it's delivery that i cannot take it seriously. and it made the trailer as something meant to sell the film!
