Movies

I think the filmmaking is admirable but there's frequently a sort of mismatch between the subject and the execution. This sort of visceral, grandiose, experiential tone worked really well (imo) for Dunkirk because that movie was all about silent men trapped in a hopeless situation, but here it sometimes feels like Nolan is afraid to let the movie breathe. Also he remains really bad at writing women.

That said, when it does click together its some of the best shit he's ever done.
Yeah, it felt like it took an hour before there was an actual scene in the movie, but I think I'll digest it better the second time; I didn't really get the full significance of the two hearings being depicted until the third hour (though that third hour really drives it home so well).

And yeah, the women are...not Chris's strong suit. The scene where Flo asks him to read the bhagavad gita in sanskrit during sex would absolutely tank a lesser movie. It's also wild that he didn't realize the figurative sex scene in the middle of the hearing where the two women are staring one another down is maybe the most instant Bechdel Test flunk put to film?

aaaaaaa-men. Zero of that onus is on FloPugh and Emily Blunt, who do what they can with insanely underwritten parts, but it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Got this set in the mail today - guess I need to start watching these - I grew up watching these back when Joe Bob had his show on The Movie Channel on Saturday nights...I kinda wish his Shudder show would occasionally go a bit more into the exploitation genre.

This is a "24 Movie Set" - but some of those are the different edits and some documentaries, but it does have a lot of movies.

It also came with 2 CD's of music - so of course I had to add it to Discogs

Supposedly James Cameron recently confirmed they're working on more Alita Battle Angel. I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea but I'm into it and am excited

I place that one with Pacific Rim in the list of films where a master craftsman makes a film that is very straightforward and earnest and not trying to be anything more than that- and the result is a bit disappointing at first but is actually extremely rewatchable.
