Movies

Saw it yesterday. I’m a huge fan of the ride. It’s probably my favorite Disneyworld ride. The movie isn’t some grand achievement or anything, but it’s pretty fun.

It was fun! I really enjoyed LaKeith Stanfield’s performance. I’m not sure JLC worked as Madame Leota, but everyone else was solid. Much better than the Eddie Murphy version.

It was also great hearing the theme in a loud theater.

Out of interest, what don't you like about streaming? Do you notice a quality drop between that and physical media?
I do notice a drop in PQ/AQ. It's not massive but it's there since streaming output is lower than a blu-ray/4K disc. Plus the subtitles are a mess.

Then there's the whole preference of physical media to streaming. I like to browse my shelves and come upon a movie i haven't seen in a long time. With streaming you have to scroll through a lot of junk and you need multiple streaming services. Plus i own all the movies in my collection and can watch it whenever (don't need internet connection) whereas streaming services can remove whatever they want whenever they want.

That's some of the reasons lol

Remember seeing it in theaters when i was little and nuts about Dinosaurs and the first scene with the Brachiosaurus made me feel like they were back again. I still feel like a little boy whenever i watch it but that scene especially gets me every time.

Awwww this is one of my son’s favorites. I got the OST on vinyl and he still requests a spin of CB it every now and then.
Saw Barbie today and had a great time with it. It’s a lot of fun, very funny, and never felt overly long or anything. Maybe I could see why people say it’s trying to do too much, but ultimately it didn’t bother me cause I just enjoyed the ride. Everyone is really good in it, but I was impressed with America Ferrera. Also, having watched an interview with Greta Gerwig about her film inspirations for the movie I can totally get what she’s going for. It’s a big mainstream film, but with a lot of smart meta commentary and solid jokes throughout. Can’t really say enough good things about it. And I never thought I’d be here praising a Barbie movie, but damn Gerwig did it.
It deserves an Oscar nod that it will probably never get. I loved it. I got to see it with all my kids including the 23 y/o. My youngest (he’s 11) told me right after leaving the theater, “I didn’t really know who to root for. I felt bad for both Barbie and Ken.” And I told him, “I think you’re supposed to feel that way .” It’s really cool when a movie can make an 11 y/o think about gender inequality in a compassionate way. It was so well done.

Also
the Ken war was freakin amazing.

I don't know if i have a particular order after Saving Private Ryan but it will include The Bridge On The River Kwai, Black Hawk Down, Dunkirk, Full Metal Jacket and i'm sure there's some more once i remember them :)
This also begs the question, what qualifies as a war movie? Is it combat? Or does strategy count? If accounting for strategy, Oppenheimer could be included

I would say, if it takes place during wartime and the story is connected to said war, then it should count as a war movie. Like Schindler's List, Paths Of Glory and From Here To Eternity. Then i guess you could make sub-genres like drama and action.

My favorite war film and the 4K and Dolby Atmos is just *chefs kiss*

Not a movie but have you watched Band Of Brothers? I feel like it’s a better version of Saving Private Ryan stretched out over a 10 episode miniseries. Saving Private Ryan is fantastic but as far as war movies go, there are a handful I enjoy more. Inglorious Basterds, MASH, Dunkirk, Three Kings, and probably my favorite, The Thin Red Line. Still, I feel like Band of Brothers tops them all.

Apocalypse Now & Platoon are my favorites. I'd say Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket and All Quiet on the western front (1930) could complete my top 5
I forgot about Platoon! That would be on my list, I love the first part of Full Metal Jacket but the second half loses some steam.

also forgot about The Great Escape which is pretty fantastic too.
