so...Megalopolis. I thought it was technically good, in the sense that the production design was good, the camera was in focus

nerds are the new bullies.

I thought I posted my review of it here but maybe not? I in no way regret seeing it. It's that type of completely batshit that becomes enjoyable presuming you find whats happening funny. That said, it's no Southland Tales... a heavily criticized, messy af film that is masterful in its satire in spite of it's indesipherbale sci-fi.

My LB review--

Yes
Nobody told me I was going to a Southland Tales sequel when I bought a ticket to Megaopolis.

I liked the first one better. It's sci-fi was equally indesipherbale but it's satire landed with force and vision and it's themes were parsable. Megalopolis is the film equivalent of word salad.

That said, I was wildly entertained during every second of Copala's dazzling mess and was giggling to the point of tears at serval points. 10 years from now it's gonna be one of those cult films that gets played on the TV's at hipster bars.

This was exactly what I expected and a fun predictable afternoon movie. Mindlessly entertaining without trying to be anything more than that.

I thought I posted this in Cafe, but yeah. Anyone watching a Halloween movie every night this month? Anyone got a good list of movies I can check out?
They kinda look like my kitties…

I think @LeeVing does a Halloween movie thread each year for spooky season.

Check it

Saw The Wild Robot. A beautiful animated story that should be shown to everyone at Disney about how to make great content that the whole family can enjoy that's not a sequel or prequel. I know the source material comes from a book and maybe Disney needs to start looking at that path. Rolled my eyes at the Mufasa preview shown before the movie. Disney will never learn.

Hasn’t it always been DreamWorks vs. Pixar/Disney tho? I feel like they’re both good for some great heartfelt films, and then some absolute duds.

lol I called it The Lost Robot earlier. It was wonderful - the animation, the story, the humor. I'll see it again. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a best picture nomination.

Yeah, I heard the Southland Tales comparisons going in...I need to rewatch ST again; when I first saw it in theaters we were laughing our asses off, though I think we thought we were laughing at it and I wonder how much I'd be laughing with it this time.

My current Megalopolis hot take is the movie would be 100% financially and artistically successful if Nic Cage had been the star.

I agree. Something about Adam Driver is offputting, but he's a good enough actor. I wonder if Cage stayed away to avoid the nepotism allegations /s
Driver is an excellent actor, but is a bit too sincere. There's a part where he's bandaged up and he keeps going "no no no no no no no" (I think it's seven times each time, I only started counting with the last couple rounds), and it clicked there: Cage can service the project and be as weird as its beating heart, but won't break it. Driver seemed scared to break it.

Funny thing: when I came back my wife said I love Adam Driver, and I had to really think about it. I liked him a lot in Girls, and I think he's a good, slightly-unconventional leading man...but it feels more like he's hitched his wagon to projects/directors I like, not the other way around. It's more like he just keeps showing up at the parties I wanna attend.

Yeah, I don't know how to explain it, but it always feels as if he's bringing "theater actor" energy to roles. He comes to the role instead of letting the roles come to him. This prevents me from accepting 100% believability in what he's doing sometimes.
