Movies

Yeah, I heard the Southland Tales comparisons going in...I need to rewatch ST again; when I first saw it in theaters we were laughing our asses off, though I think we thought we were laughing at it and I wonder how much I'd be laughing with it this time.

My current Megalopolis hot take is the movie would be 100% financially and artistically successful if Nic Cage had been the star.

If Nic Cage had been cast in Driver's place, he would have surely approached it closer to the ways in which Plaze and Shiala did. Which would have moved the film closer to working in my book.

Here are some LB reviews that I think nail Southland Tales. The review that is longer and split into two parts, comes pretty close to nailing it imo... except, unlike him, I find the film viscerally funny and, thus, do enjoy it. And I do find the 3rd act indecipherable.

Southland Tales is one that weirdly gets rewatched by my wife and I usually once a year. It has good rewatch value. But it's not one that hit nearly as well on my first watch. Now I enjoy it each time.

One of the most satisfying villain deaths ever.

Ollie: "As a species we're fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill one another. Why do you think we invented politics and religion?" lol

The B&W version is the way to go.

I have never seen that version and since this was the first rewatch in 16 years, I figured I’d go with the color version as a refresher and then do B&W next time.

Does it make the CGI look better?
It's the only decolorization that's made any thematic/visual sense to me.
Yeah, it gives the movie a real Twilight Zone vibe that works really well and makes some of the sketchier effects less jarring.

Watched Inside Out 2 last night, kind of disappointing. It had its charm and laughs, but wasn't anywhere near as powerful as the original. Felt a bit unfocused at times and kinda messy. The original was memorable and lasting, this one just felt like a cash grab with occasional laughs. Still a decent watch, but disappointed a bit once credits rolled.

I had the opposite reaction to it, but I do get what you mean. I research anxiety, so I was thrilled to see them developing the messy nature of anxiety. It worked for me. And I loved the hockey part of the story.

Anxiety was the only fleshed out character of the newbies, IMO. Everyone else just felt like a pack-in to sell figures and toys.

I have anxiety and was happy to see their role visualized, but the whole story just felt like it needed another 20 minutes to breathe

What would the lesbian emotions be?

For the story it would have to be about her moving in with her girlfriend after their second date.

I would go to opening night.
You could probably throw in romance or longing or something as an emotion and they're just over the top. The "deepest darkest secrets" stuff paired with her infatuation with Val (and her playing hockey) had me thinking someone at Pixar was trying to throw in a bunch of subtext juuuuuuust in case.

Just caught it today, and agree. It's cute and fine, but unremarkable. Bums me out thinking how long ago the last time I truly loved a Pixar movie was.
