New Music Friday!

Ok it’s pretty wild that the new Caroline Polachek has so many ideas all over it. The varying styles is crazy. But somehow it all totally works? it’s so much more a push forward from Pang, which I love.

Pang definitely feels like the more cohesive product but this album is way more consistent in quality even if it’s all over the place! I had big expectations for her and she totally surpassed them

Yeah I get what you mean. Pang is sonically cohesive and flows really well. But Desire is like an island hopping mixtape but every song works as a piece together.

The Polachek isn't for me, but I can see why a lot of people are digging it. A few songs I like, but just am not a big dance pop fan. I don't think I ever listened to Pang, but always did like Chairlift
I can appreciate the fact that Caroline Polacheck isn't for you but too call it a dance pop record baffles me because to me the album is everything but dance pop 🤷 it's off-kilter electro-pop, art-pop, progressive-pop, 70s Italo-pop, flamenco, there is a children choir, synthesizers, drum machines and even bagpipes! So again how is this a dance pop record?!

Because it makes you want to dance?

I don't mean to minimize it to one genre as it definitely isn't, but just describing what I hear from it. The upbeat synths and echoey vocals that could play well in a dance club setting. A lot of that is at the core of it whether you're adding a lot of other sounds to it. Compared to the more dream pop landscape of a lot of Chairlift.

I am on the same page with you. I have nothing against dance or indie pop. I’m enjoys a few albums and artists but it’s not a genre I spend a lot of time with I tend to prefer pop singles to whole albums with a few exceptions.

It has been another loaded week!!! My calls for help last month were heard.

🔥
  • カネコ アヤノ - タオルケットは穏やかな
  • Kelela - Raven [ethereal R&B is best R&B]
  • Paramore - This is Why [repeated listens opened this up for me to warrant placing here. "You First" and "Thick Skull" had me feeling like I was experiencing this band's magic back as a teen ❤️]
  • Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You [this may surprise a few...this was my least favorite of the albums in this tier, to the point where I almost dropped it down. I still don't think "Sunset" is a compelling single. The feature with Dido on "Fly to You" was like pouring a glass of water into another glass of water. It isn't nearly as cohesive as Pang, something that frustrated me at first. It may be in my top10 of the year for now, but I am uncertain it stays there by the halfway point of '23. But to be clear, this is still (mostly) a delight and another chronicle in Polachek's brand of art pop]
👍
  • Black Belt Eagle Scout - The Land, The Water, The Sky
  • Sabrina Claudio - Archives & Lullabies [bringing some sensual R&B to the table; not complaining]
  • Kelly Lee Owens - LP.8.2 (EP)
  • Liv.e - Girl in the Half Pearl [I'm torn on this one. It is incredibly chaotic, but the ideas expressed are unique and expansive. It's a lot to handle even after multiple listens]
  • Yo La Tengo - This Stupid World [this works better as a passive listening experience]
🤷‍♂️
  • Rebecca Black - Let Her Burn [it isn't bad, although some songs are flops]
  • Tennis - Pollen [once you've heard one Tennis album, you've experienced the discography. It's totally fine, just unspectacular]

This is Why is an enjoyable interpretation of modern post-punk in the Paramore style, but is currently not year end top50 material at this time. That may change, but...

Opinion has changed.
