New Music Friday!

I’ll be interested to know what @Joe Mac thinks.

So halfway through and I like it but I don’t love it.

There are definite production decisions there but I don’t think it’s bad production or that it sounds audibly poor, they’ve just gone in a direction of making it more radio friendly and adding a pop sheen and that won’t be for everyone.

I think the main thing for me halfway through is that it’s not outstanding like the last two because the songs are mostly just good, not great.

And after finishing it. I’d say two things. She doesn’t necessarily suit the slick radio production and it’s too ambitious an album in a way, it tries to do too much. There are a few songs I like on it but there are too many styles, too many ideas and it doesn’t feel like it ties together as an album.

So, what I said right above your tag. Lol.

I'm gonna read up on what she has to say about it this weekend. I will say this, It is already the front runner for most listens for this week. I have already listened to it three times, so you know there's that. We'll see. There are very strong songs on it. The production is a poor choice. You are right there really aren't bad decisions other than it's not a direction she should have headed with this material. I do believe she could make a hell of a pop album, but the songs would need to be different and not so much banjo and stuff.

She talked about the album in NPR Morning Edition today…

No idea what to listen to. Haven't tried anything new for three weeks. Anyone?
Same. In the last four or five weeks or so I've been in the 2023-new-music-slump pt 2... That being said, I'm excited today for new albums from Hozier, Genesis Owusu, Horrendous, and Persia White. Haven't listened to any of them yet (on a mini holiday with the fam), but plan to before the weekend is over.

I still need to listen to that NPR thing. I will say this though. I think There is No Other is her best work and I am wondering how much having full on collaboration affects her albums from a programing standpoint. They're Calling Me Home works better as an album than Freedom Highway or Tomorrow is My Turn as well. However, eventually, I liked the songs on the two total solo albums better. Maybe she just needs help bringing it all together. I actually hated Tomorrow is my Turn when it came out and I love it now.

August has been DEAD with new releases, at least for me. Hopefully September and October pick up a bit. I think that's usually how it is with so many people touring our just on vacation from the industry this month.
Last Friday was the heaviest week for stuff I actually wanted to own all year… Rhiannon, Isakov, Glaspy, Pale Jay and Kim Register. So you know ymmv. Next week is pretty big for me too with Old Crow, Mipso , Becca Mancari, Betty Davis, Jamie Branch and Hiss Golden Messenger.

Next week is looking like a real big one for me! jaimie branch, the Sun Ra poetry tribute comp, Morgan Wade and Khalab being huge excitement and at least a dozen other albums solidly on my list so far, and another dozen or so on my tentative list.
