October 2020 Challenge Thread: Let’s Get Weird

Day 11: Song about Rain - It’s the beginning of the rainy season here, spin something that references rain

Kelly Finnigan - The Tales People Tell

Everytime It Rains starts out with and has sounds of rain throughout, plus it's always one of the first that comes to mind when I think of rain. This was my favorite album of 2019 and it's been too long since I've listened to it. Definitely still holds up and is fantastic from start to finish! Fitting because it's a cloudy day here with rain in the forecast.

Ann Peebles - I Can’t Stand the Rain

This is somewhere in my top 5 favorite soul albums of all time. I love that she repeats sings the same line “I can’t stand the rain...” in the first two songs, it’s too good to just keep to one song

“Raining In Darling” is such a beautiful song and the perfect closer to Will Oldham’s masterwork. The track is bittersweet though, in that at just 1:54 in length it’s practically over before it starts.

Day 10 | Live From New York It’s Saturday Night!
Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap

This is one of my favorite albums ever. He was the underdog independent Chicago rapper who got critical acclaim after this album, and in the years following, anticipation and expectations for his follow-up went through the roof. First he appeared with his crew as The Social Experiment on their 2015 Surf album to help whet fans’ appetite. That winter, he was a musical guest on SNL to play a couple songs, including “Sunday Candy” from Surf. I remember being so excited and proud to watch it.

Then a couple of months later, in the midst of Kanye’s hectic release for The Life Of Pablo, Kanye was the musical guest on SNL. Chance came out to do his verse for “Ultralight Beam” and stole the show. It seemed like the highlight of his career being able to not only record a song with his musical idol, but also to perform it on national TV. It felt like a star-making moment.

His follow-up album came out a few months later, and while it was good, I remember being disappointed that it didn’t live up to the hype. He ended up winning a Grammy for that album and appearing & hosting SNL a couple times since, and also hit another high point when he headlined Lollapalooza in Chicago in 2017 with an enormous crowd. But for me, that SNL appearance with Kanye was the peak of excitement after Acid Rap.

Day 10: Live From New York It’s Saturday Night!

Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. (Columbia, 2014 pressing)

I was going to dig out the Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band - Live 1975-85 box set for today's challenge but decided on this fantastic album instead. Heres also a clip of them performing:
