Party up moodge, it’s the June 2023 Vinyl Challenge!!

Day 7
Footstompin - not sure how David did not get sued for this song when Fame became a #1 in the US.
Play something that reminds you of a different song or artist

Chapterhouse - Whirlpool

When I first heard the track "Falling Down" the opening riff reminded me of U2's "Mysterious Ways." Turns out both albums came out the same year, but Chapterhouse's came out earlier, I just heard U2's song long before this one (to be fair, 8-year-old me wasn't too hip on the UK shoegaze scene).

Totally forgot about these 2 songs. Very much of the time.

Also, those shoegaze “live” videos really date themselves

Day 10
Isolar I and II were the names of the StationToStation and Stage tours. It also is an anagram of sailor, which was Bowie’s screen name on BowieNet.
Play a puzzle.

Lootpack "Soundpieces: Da Antidote!" - if you take all these "Soundpieces" and put them together you get a clearer picture of who this Madlib fellow is....Every time I pull this one out I'm always surprised at how dope it is and say to myself, I should listen to this more and then I never do...until the next time I pull it out!

Day 11
The Jean Genie – is a song about about Iggy Pop. Like many of the best Bowie songs it’s a ‘portrait’ of someone who simply caught his eye
Play a song about another musician
1000004226.jpg
Edan "Primitive Plus" - features the song "Ultra 88" which is a tribute to Ultramagnetic MC's and is done as a "lost" song from the group from 88 in their style, sort of as if he's Kool Keith...it's both odd and cool at the same time, sort of like Edan or Kool Keith...

Day 9
‘Heroes’/Hansa Studio - Though the albums Low, ‘Heroes’ and Lodger are called the “Berlin Trilogy” only ‘Heroes’ was recored at the famous Hansa studio.
Play an album that has taken on a mythology all of its own.

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

After Chapterhouse I'm still in a shoegaze mood, so how about the most mythologized album of that genre?

Angel Bat Dawid – Requiem For Jazz
1000004926.jpg

Originally commissioned for the 2019 Hyde Park Jazz Festival in Chicago, this 12-part Afrofuturist requiem is adapted from the Roman Catholic Liturgical Requiem Missal, paired with dialogue from the 1959 documentary The Cry of Jazz, and examines the genre's role in Black History and the promise of what to come. That's a lot of mythologies packed into this piece!

Day 12
Kabbalah - David (in)famously dabbled in the occult in the 70s (don’t do drugs kids).
Play something mystical or related to the occult

These guys are a bit under the radar. Right up the alley of @Enaz Fox and @Hemotep if they're unfamiliar. They jam.

One LP containing 3 long songs. They're right up front with all their evil. It's on their sleeve. No veiled messages here. These guys even got their own custom pentagram thingie spelling out their name. Top-shelf occult cred...

Alastor - Black Magic

The Neptune Power Federation - Music From Lucifer's Universe

Every album this band has put out has blown me away. They're like the woman led version of Ghost, but honestly I think they're better. Covers like this are probably what keeps people from checking them out, which is a shame because they're excellent. I've said this on here before, but I'll keep preaching it, Lauren Friedman is hands down one of the best front women in music today. She's insanely talented.

He's actually a church going son of a preacher, but Vincent Furnier's on stage persona, Alice, has often been considered to be involved in the occult. I recall reading that the name "Alice Cooper" came from a Ouija board. Not sure if there is truth in that, but it's a good story.

Day 10: Isolar I and II

Halsey - (Manic)

IMG_6656.jpeg

Halsey is an anagram of her real name Ashley (and the name of the street in Brooklyn where an ex-boyfriend of theirs lived). I also find it puzzling why they decided to cut 3 songs from the middle of the album out of the vinyl release rather than making it 2 discs (nvm that sPeCiAl EdItIoN picture disc)
