Party up moodge, it’s the June 2023 Vinyl Challenge!!

Day 13
Laughing Gnome
Play the worst song by your favourite artist

TBH, I can't honestly say that U2 is still my fave band - I've seen them the most, 74 times to date (plus two more Bono on Bway shows) and my screen name IS threesunrises... so I guess I have to pick them.

Unfortunately, I can't even say that I've ever listened to this album in entirety, so instead of offering you a worst song, here is a worst album. It's awful, beyond bad, and I prob couldn't even name a single song from it without looking at the tracklist.

U2 - Songs of Experience

Day 11
The Jean Genie – is a song about about Iggy Pop. Like many of the best Bowie songs it’s a ‘portrait’ of someone who simply caught his eye
Play a song about another musician

The Replacements "Pleased To Meet Me" (1987 Sire; 2020 Rhino)
Paul Westerberg sings about the singer of Big Star on "Alex Chilton". And Chilton plays guitar on "Can't Hardly Wait".

Day 12
Kabbalah - David (in)famously dabbled in the occult in the 70s (don’t do drugs kids).
Play something mystical or related to the occult

Rush "2112" (1976 Mercury; 2015 reissue)
Pentacle on the cover and the 80's satanic-panic to go with it... the song is a sci-fi story though. But facts never stopped anyone.

Day 13
Laughing Gnome
Play the worst song by your favourite artist

Talking Heads "True Stories" (1986 EMI Japan)
The worst Talking Heads song IMO, is "Stay Up Late" on "Little Creatures", but that happens to be the only Talking Heads album I don't have on vinyl. So I'll go with what I think is next in line, "Papa Legba" off "True Stories". The song has a Haitian theme, which is not necessarily a bad thing with these guys since they routinely and successfully incorporate world sounds and themes into their music, but the execution here is just not that good.

Day 14
Mime - Bowie was hired to go on tour with T-Rex as their opening act. As a mime.
Play a not so great career choice

Scarlett Johansson – Anywhere I Lay My Head

Streaming for this one because I dont have this on vinyl and certainly wouldn't pay current asking price, or any, really, for a copy.

I was tempted to grab a copy of St. Anger to play for today, but then I'd have a copy of St. Anger.

Great soundtrack. Not a great career choice for those involved with this not so great film.

Various Artists ~ Batman Forever

NICE play! I had these exact thoughts for a brief moment yesterday (but don't have this soundtrack on vinyl, nor have I had it on CD for years now)

I really wish I had a copy of the Batman & Robin soundtrack, as that movie was so much worse with the Clooney Bat-Nipple suit. But I'll work with what I have 🤣

Edited to add - just looked at the tracklist for Batman & Robin. It's got a R Kelly track, so that would really have fit the bad career choice prompt.

B&R is the absolute worst. About 15 years ago my friends were about to watch it so I got really high and decided to join them and for a brief while I had myself convinced we had it wrong all along and it was actually a work of subversive genius, then the bat-credit card came out and I realized, in fact, we'd been correct all along and the movie was absolute dog shit!

This is the better soundtrack of the two, but I remember B&R having a few good cuts at least.

Day 13: The Laughing Gnome

Since I don’t have Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers yet (there’s a couple of songs on that album I don’t care for at all), I’ll have to go with another artist in my top 5…

Mariah Carey - Daydream

IMG_6674.jpeg

One of her best albums, and it’d probably be her best if didn’t contain one of her worst ever songs. (I haven’t gone back to her 2000s work in a long while, there may be something worse there for all I know)
