Also, I don't know if anyone's brought this up (see the above comment about metering social media), but while it hasn't made the outlook feel any better, I've felt a lot less blindsided by the Trump victory over the last couple days as I've considered that the Biden election wasn't some swerve away from fascism or reactionary attitudes and that 2020-2024 was no cakewalk reprieve, as well as recognizing the W Bush administration also laid a lot of groundwork towards American voters favoring authoritarianism and score-settling, let alone the path the Republican party's taken since it started courting the Christian right in the 60s/70s.
I refuse the idea that our overall character as a people is that of cruelty and divisiveness, but I recognize our governmental system has been building up to this for decades (not just this election cycle, or even the last eight years), and we fought against it every step of the way. I'm scared for what comes next, but I'm also cognizant that good people don't suddenly lose their souls or their voices, and that I've done the work of loving and living under right-wing rule for more than half my life already. Again, not diminishing what's next or saying I'm gonna eat it up and ask for seconds, but reminding myself we've stood strong against fascists before, and in my lifetime.
