Political Discussion

So, I had asked my father for the context / point of his link to a random law this morning.

He says under this law, which was signed into law in 2016, military control does not get transferred to a "new" president until 60 days after the inauguration date. That being said, Trump is still in charge of the military / commander in chief and why the democrats were trying to impeach him for a second time.
Yes, please, can Trump go to a podium in front of Four Seasons Landscape and deploy the military to do ANYTHING.........lets see how that pans out, lol

This one's rich.

I got a text from my father last night that Trump's grand plan began with the assassination of JFK, then his brother RFK. In 1999 he also had John Jr killed so HRC would win the NY senate seat instead of him.

All this over some plot to enslave every man, women and child in the United States and to protect ourselves from turning into a communist dictatorship.

Trump had JFK assassinated when he was 17 years old?

Big Pharma's gonna do what Big Pharma does--namely getting millions addicted to opiods and then trying to get the US taxpayers to help them pay the settlement.

The Washington Post, which analyzed regulatory filings, reported Friday that "as details of the blockbuster settlement were still being worked out, pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson and the 'big three' drug distributors—McKesson, AmerisourceBergen, and Cardinal Health—all updated their financial projections to include large tax benefits stemming from the expected deal."

Weissman called it "beyond outrageous for the drug makers and distributors to take a tax deduction for their settlement of city and county claims relating to the drug companies' alleged role in creating and worsening the opioid addiction epidemic."

"Making this scheme even more infuriating," he added, "is that the opioid manufacturer and distributor companies are preparing to claim billions in tax subsidies via a Covid-19 relief provision."

According to the Post, "U.S. tax laws generally restrict companies from deducting the cost of legal settlements from their taxes, with one major exception: Damages paid to victims as restitution for the misdeeds can usually be deducted."

The newspaper noted that "Congress has placed stricter limits on such deductions in recent years, and some tax experts say the Internal Revenue Service could challenge the companies' attempts to deduct opioid settlement costs."

But the ploy might work, as The Week noted, thanks to the CARES Act, which "opened up billions of dollars in tax breaks to companies regardless of pandemic suffering."

The Post provided an example of how one of the companies may exploit the loophole: "Dublin, Ohio-based drug distributor Cardinal Health said earlier this month it planned to collect a $974 million cash refund because it claimed its opioid-related legal costs as a 'net operating loss carryback'—a tax provision Congress included in last year's coronavirus bailout package as a way of helping companies struggling during the pandemic."

When Duke Power had the big coal ash issue a couple years back and the courts decided they were libel, they brazenly went to the state house and asked for a rate hike in order to pay for the clean up and the house awarded them the hike.

They also send me a satisfaction survey twice a year that I fill with poor ratings, because they can’t get power back on in a reasonable amount of time when it goes down, because of the coal ash rate hikes and I usually throw in a bit about how I don’t understand why a monopoly needs to advertise.

why stop at JFK? Why not the Pharos. Why didn’t he stop them from enslaving the Jews?

Damn, Republicans are being savage.

7 Republican senators voted to convict Trump. Several of them have now been censured. Most notable is senator Richard Burr of North Carolina.

Senatorial censures
The Senate has two basic forms of punishment available to it: expulsion, which requires a two-thirds vote; or censure, which requires a majority vote. Censure is a formal statement of disapproval.

Meanwhile, Mitch McConnell is signaling to the republican party to block Biden's agenda in the name of "unity".

Basic Biden is trying to call for unity between democrats and republicans and is campaigning for that today. Mitch McConnell is calling for the Republican party to unify in opposition saying that this is the only true way to create unity. Republicans and Democrats don't see eye to eye with most issues and are in opposition to each other and expect that to continue throughout the Biden presidency.

Mitch McConnell is also signaling that the GOP does not support another relief bill what so ever.

"There is no doubt that some families are still struggling. This isn’t finished," Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said of the bill earlier this month. "But experts agree the remaining damage to our economy does not require another multi-trillion dollar, non-targeted band-aid."

NBC is also reporting that 75% of republican senators still support Donald Trump and would like to see him back in Government in some form or another.

Here's some good news!

The White House on Monday announced a program to extend mortgage relief and a moratorium on home foreclosures through June as thousands of Americans continue to struggle to keep up with payments during the coronavirus pandemic.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a housing affordability crisis," the White House said in a statement. "Now, homeowners will receive urgently needed relief as we face this unprecedented national emergency. Today’s action builds on steps the President took on Day One to extend foreclosure moratoriums for federally guaranteed mortgages."

How do these programs really help other than helping keep you in your home now?

I have seen discussions that many Americans are still being financially ruined and have scars on their credit reports that will stick with them for at least 10 years. Many Americans could still come out of this not credit worthy.

Those Americans who are not able to get their mortgage current by June will still face foreclosures and that this does nothing but extend the time they have to find a new place to live.

The $1400 stimulus could go a long way with helping these Americans, but Republicans say it's not needed and oppose it.

We are not current on our mortgage. 3 months behind. We are in the process of deferring it to the end of the mortgage. It seems like a government program that is picking up that debt. I’m sure a lot of people are doing the same. I went to the back the other day to get the papers notarized. When I inquired about about a refinance and explained our position, the loan officer was positive that it could happen.

I thought the student loan moratorium was extended until September 2021?

On Jan. 20, 2021, the COVID-19 emergency relief measures were extended on ED-owned federal student loans through Sept. 30, 2021

The IRS just garnished my entire federal tax return and handed it over to the Department of Education. I wonder if this will be like last year where they will end up refunding it to me in the form of a check 2 to 3 months later.

This essay is not a brief for free speech absolutism or an effort to rationalise conspiracy theory or an attack on higher learning. It is about the future of the Democratic Party, the future of the left, and here is the suggestion I mean to make: the form of liberalism I have described here is inherently despicable. A democratic society is naturally going to gag when it is told again and again in countless ways, both subtle and gross, that our great national problem is our failure to heed the authority of traditional elites.[....]The mob attack on the Capitol frightened us all. But for Democrats to choose censorship (via the monopolists of Silicon Valley) as the solution to the problem is a shocking breach of faith. There are many words one might use to describe a party that, over the last 30 years, has shown itself contemptuous of working-class grievances while protective of the authority of the respected... but ‘liberal’ isn’t one of them.
