Political Discussion

Minority report or 1984? Either way, what does the future look like with technologies such as this?
AI is not ready for prime time.

Algorithms are just math equations (and most of them are based on basic linear models to “predict” which is nothing more than fitting the slope) and though they may predict at a decent clip ( though I would hate to be one of those in the 10%), many don’t know why it’s getting it right and much of it is a fluke based on proximity. A professor of mine was able to find a correlation between small neighborhood liquor stores in NOLA and shooting crimes. So an “algorithm” that predicts crime would probably just target a high crime area ( much like my professor found—consequently, the city made it harder to obtain a liquor license and this reduced crime or at least it did about 15 years ago). This is the proximity fallacy that a ton of algorithms suffer from and it’s their biggest weakness. Algorithms just make a problem worse by discriminating because ultimately, statistically speaking, your outcomes are most like those around you, and algorithms don’t account for outliers—those people whose outcomes are less like the people around them.

This is the definition of "having someone by the balls" and it ain't a good thing for a government to exhibit. Teachers are leaving in droves because of this crap and it's not fair.

I'm going to be 58 this year and I know I'll see a lot of what might come, but I can't even imagine what the future holds if things don't start to snap back into some sort of common sense reality in the near future.

Unfortunately the world is at its most inequitable since before the Second World War. When people are poor and desperate they trend towards extremes. America’s economic politics being badly skewed liberal exacerbates this. We’ve got to find solutions, and quick.

The last couple of weeks have been mentally exhausting for me. I have my daughters future to think about and have already decided that when she is able to grasp reality, I will encourage her to seek a life outside of this country. I need to be proactive because my trust in the people to actually care is waining.
Same. I have two younger daughters. Their futures have been on my mind constantly these past weeks. My wife and I are strongly considering homeschooling them come fall (which is something we never thought we'd be deciding to do). We have to be proactive for our kids and their futures..

We have leftover embryos from the rounds of IVF that we did in order to have our son this year (2 months old). Under a state law currently under consideration in Ohio, we'll probably have to transfer the embryos to a different state and go there the next time we want to try for a baby. We definitely won't be able to donate them to science anymore in Ohio once we don't want any more kids, because it considers life at fertilization. It also throws birth control up in the air too. Fun times in the Buckeye State

I imagine homeschooling will add extra challenges to life for you and your wife but it may well be one of the best things you can do for your younglings going forward. I wish I were able to do so with my son, but at least his mom got him into a pretty forward-thinking nature school near her place come September. Things are nowhere near as fucked up here (though they are far more fucked up than most are willing to admit - particularly when looking down so smugly upon what's going on with y'all, which really grinds me) but I still think the vast majority of our education system is woefully inadequate for present reality and extremely way less so for facing the future. I wish your family every success if homeschooling is in fact the road y'all decide to take.

Only 4 out of 10 Americans would be able to cover a $1,000 unexpected emergency. Whether it be a trip to the ER or repairs to their car.

The survey also reports that 30% of families making $100,000 a year or more report living paycheck to paycheck.

I've been following some discussion on this and of course many boomers don't blame anyone but the people who can't afford a surprise $1,000 bill. That this has nothing to do with poverty or the pandemic but everything to do with "keeping up with the Jones". That we don't have a poverty issue, we have an issue with financial irresponsibility where people scale up their spending to match their income. Buying that $7 starbucks coffee every day, buying a $1000+ iphone every two years and so on. "Stuff that that don't need."

Most people in the discussion were not taking into account the high cost of living. What it costs to rent these days. Inflation and how much everything is going up, especially food.

It's not as simple as "financial irresponsibility".

People across multiple states did not get their unemployment checks yesterday after a cyber attack (not disclosed but likely ransomware), target computer software and systems provided by a company in Florida that multiple states use to run their unemployment benefits systems.

Unemployment benefits payments have been delayed while they work through the issues.

I wonder how many people in your situation, living in northern states, are considering looking for employment up in Ontario and starting the process to immigrate? How many will up and quit and leave instead of fighting it out? It's not like its all rosy up here, and you guys tend to have influence on our fringe groups (which grow and get more and more vocal, as evidenced by our "convoy" people), but for all its flaws our legal system hasn't been polarized and hopefully won't be. It's crazy the direction you're all heading in. And despite all that's been going on, rulings on electoral law that may come in your next term is looking even scarier to me than anything to date.
