The latest on the state of student loans as of this morning is "To expect an announcement form Biden / Department of Education in the next week or so".
Really, this is going to come down to the final hour pretty much isn't it? I read that answer as we may not get the answer this week.
All the speculation is Biden will extend the pause 1 more time. And only one more time. He's not doing it to help Americans or out of his own kindness. He's doing it for political reasons and getting his party through the midterm elections.
Biden made it clear last December that student loan repayments will resume in February. He sent a very strong message before political pressure resulted him pressing pause again. Bottom line, he doesn't believe in the pauses or forgiveness. His arm is going to have to be pulled to make anything happen.
Also, reading up on their plans for student loans and those who are in default. Back in April new rules were set up allowing for defaulted student loans to become in good standing again should the borrower enter a good faith repayment plan within a year of the end of the pause. However, in doing so, the debt forgiveness resets for the income based repayment plan option. You start at day 0 again, and it's now after 29 years of payments the remaining debt is forgiven. So in my case, until I retire. lol
Apparently this is the only way to get your loans out of default, and avoid wage garnishments, collection attempts as well as collection and legal fees being added to your account. After 1 year as passed, even if you enter a good faith repayment plan, your loans will still be considered legally defaulted. And this so called "deal" is only if you contact the department of education and set it up. If you just resume your payments without contacting them you are SOL.
