Political Discussion

He needs to drop out already. This whole letting him take his time thing is screwing us over with each passing day.

The incumbency is one of the most valuable things a candidate can have right? Will him dropping out 3.5 months out really make any difference?

It’s still relatively early. Of course the sooner the better but things change fast. The GOP is right in the middle of their convention and Trump assassination attempt. If Biden drops out before the convention the Democrats should still have plenty of time to rally around the new candidate before the November elections.

Feels like the Democrats are setting up someone to blame for a loss no matter who’s the candidate. Have yet to hear details on how any candidate plans to win. 😕
No set up needed. If they lose, it’s Biden’s (and his handlers) fault. Full stop.

He hasn’t even dropped out yet. There hasn’t been a new candidate selected yet. It would be insane to draw up plans on how to win until after these things are decided. Different potential plans for different potential candidates.

Donald Trump is not Ronald Reagan (or even George W Bush) there are plenty of ways for a Democratic candidate to win in November.

I understand this is a less than ideal way for things to progress but we need to let the process play out before we deem it a failure.

Their will be plenty of time to play the blame game in the gulags if Trump manages to win.

Here’s why I can’t get worked up by polls that say Trump leads Biden 46 to 42.

It makes me actually worry more.

The electoral college tends to favor the GOP over the popular vote.

Historically, if the popular vote and the electoral college both align, they are pretty close to what the polls show.

When the popular vote and electoral college don't align, it's usually an upset by a few points and in favor of the GOP.

I don't know if a democrat has ever not had the popular vote, but won the electoral college in modern history.

It’s the exact thing Biden’s people are pointing to. They’re pointing out defiantly that all the people calling for his ousting were the same that resulted in Trump winning in 2016 by asking him to step aside in favor of Hillary based on her polling.

It’s only happened a handful of times…

I think we're all thinking about Biden's potential replacement backwards. The reason nobody is putting anyone forward on the record is because Biden's base of support is still a plurality, if not the majority, of the party. He has to throw his weight behind someone and endorse them, asking his supporters to give this person their votes, before the party will coalesce around someone. Stepping aside is half the equation; his endorsement is critical.
Yeah, if /when he’s stepping aside, he’s gonna want his replacement to be seen as his hand-picked successor. Biden and the new nominee holding hands all the way to November 8th.

I am obviously a lefty and very much think the government is essential to providing infrastructure and regulations to protect and provide for it’s citizens but the government is also incredibly bureaucratic, inefficient, and could royally bungle just about anything.

There are things the public sector does well and things it does badly. The public sector does immeasurably better in areas where there are natural monopolies and there is a need to serve a public need.

The private sector does much better at production and areas where several entities can compete.

The problem largely is where the private sector has been entrusted in providing services where there is a natural monopoly. It’s led to such a shocking state of affairs in so many key services.

Yes - I think it is a big assumption that all of the likely Biden voters would vote for a replacement. It did not work for Lyndon Johnson.

I absolutely agree here. We all know concerns about Biden’s age aren’t necessarily new. Rep. Dean Phillips launched his primary campaign ostensibly due to them. And Phillips was trounced in the primary. If this comes across as Candidate X and Party Big Wigs pushed Joe out against his will, legions of Biden voters won’t even go to the polls and the ramifications could run all the way down the ticket.

If Biden steps aside, it can’t be forced or coerced, and he needs to “bless” the new candidate and campaign for them to keep people from being put off by it all. And the message needs to be “Biden is doing all he can to make sure Trump doesn’t get back in the White House. Now it’s your turn voters.”

Which, to me, are more points in Harris’ favor of Biden step aside. He chose Harris as his running mate/replacement/successor already in 2020, and he’s already stated he feels she’s the future of the party. Newsom et al would leave too many feeling cold or disloyal.
