Television

The Last Of Us premiere was quite good. I never played the video game but have enjoyed the post apocalyptic genre. The most apt comparison at this point is the pilot episodes of The Walking Dead, a show that had one of the best opening episodes of a series in TV history. That show had a solid run but ultimately it never had an end point so it would drift from plot to plot reveling in torturing the protagonists. Eventually The Walking Dead stopped being something I enjoyed and I tapped out after they killed off Carl. The nice thing about The Last Of Us is that it appears to have a similar cinematic flare to that of the beginning of The Walking Dead it also has HBO behind it. While I appreciate AMC’s handling of critical darlings Mad Men and Breaking Bad I feel like they did The Walking Dead dirty by over extending it in every way possible and from a money making standpoint that makes sense since I don’t think any other AMC property came close to TWD in profitability. All that to say, HBO has has a long history of telling the story that needs to be told and then letting shows come to a natural conclusion. This gives me hope that the quality of this The Last Of Us will will extend beyond the pilot throughout the series.

Also, this show is gonna make it tough for me to enjoy mushrooms moving forward, isn’t it?

I have only watched S1 and played the (acclaimed) Walking Dead video game, but imo it's plot driven where as The Last of Us is character driven. I feel comfortable saying it because its a point that I've heard echo'd by people familar with both properties.

The main influences on LoU the game were The Road and Children of Men if that says anything.

I can see both influences. I hope it’s more Children Of Men than The Road though, as bleak as Children of Men is The Road is a deep black void where all hope for humanity goes to die.

Ellie provides a LOT of levity in the first game and there are moments of profound beauty. I trust the first season of the show will juggle the light and dark just as deftly.

The concept is brilliant, especially now :

I also have never played the game but I really enjoyed the premiere episode. I was concerned that it would look too much like game play and take me out of the show, but it didn’t detract at all, and the game must be awesome because I still felt like it was cinematic. Plus they get Depeche Mode points.

Watched the Last Of Us premiere and loved it. I'm a big fan of the games, having played through a couple of times each and really enjoyed how they included shot-for-shot parts from the games alongside fresh ideas and storylines.

Really excited to see where they take it from here.

I haven't played the games but there were definitely scenes where I felt like they were re-creating video game cut scenes (pickup truck scene with plane crash?)

I finally got around to watching Fleabag. I have a hard time with shows where the main character is difficult to like, but they did a great job of warming you towards her. It was hilarious and sad. I enjoyed season two far more than season one. Overall I'm glad I gave it a watch.

I really need to jump back into Killing Eve, I think.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge might have the best camera-looks in history.

I'm all in for The Last Of Us, and I wasn't super anticipating it or anything. I have heard about the game for years, but I didn't even know what it was about. So I was skeptical of the adaptation just cause...video game adaptation doesn't scream great to me. But I was impressed with that first episode. Excited to see where it goes.

Just finished up the recent season of Jack Ryan. I think I enjoyed it more than the previous two seasons (definitely better than season 2). The best part of the show is the action sequences and the on location shooting and this show had all that. The political and spy intrigue is all crazy absurd but that is just Tom Clancy for ya. If you can get beyond all the terrible Russki accents it’s a nice way to kill a few hours.
My wife and I were going to start the new season but then we realized we don't remember anything that happened and we don't really care enough to go watch a summary video.

Echoing what others have said about LoU:1. I've never played the games, but love the genre so I was anticipating something great. My wife is quick to eyeroll at anything approaching zombie cliches like Walking Dead, but I think she's on board for now.

Jack Ryan is a fun ride while you're watching it. It's not memorable, but it's good Tom Clancy schlock.
