The February Record Spin Challenge - It's All Connected, Maaaannnnn

Day 13 Play something by an artist that would disagree with yesterday’s artist about something.

Dead Kennedys "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" - I'm sure the Dead Kennedys would be thoroughly offended by the offense name of yesterday's band, Holy Fuck, disgusting! Pearls clutched!

The Cure - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me

I actually know very little about Sarah Neufeld other than her music, so I'm really reaching here, but I can say that the way she uses her violin and the way strings have been used on Cure albums are very different, so maybe a collaboration would lead to some disagreement there?

14. Play an album by a band or artist you would like to see open for yesterday’s at a concert.

DC Gore "All These Things"
(2022 Double Six)
Here's one from 2022 that I enjoy quite a lot and flew under the radar. DC Gore owes a clear debt to 80's synthpop and new romantic vocalists and would be great openers for Depeche Mode.

In case anyone feels stuck with continuing the chain, here's a wild card I found online! Play it on any day.

15. Play a song or album that could be the theme song to an imaginary TV show whose soundtrack would also feature yesterday’s artist.

New Order "Power Corruption And Lies"
(1983 Factory Canadian pressing)
Age Of Consent sounds like it could be the theme song to a TV show of the same name. The soundtrack could definitely also feature DC Gore, since they are clearly influenced by bands like New Order. It all fits.

Day 11. Play an album that does something very different with an instrument used on yesterday’s album.

Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things

Squarepusher uses samples of traditional instruments (guitars, bass, drums, etc…) and reconceptualized and manipulates them in ways that make them sound at once foreign and familiar.

Day 12. Play an album that was not as popular as yesterday’s pick.

Times New Viking - Rip It Off

Popularity is obviously a bit subjective so I went by the “Want/Have” totals in Discogs, and by a decent amount 135/756 vs. Squarepusher’s 289/1.9K Rip It Off is decidedly less popular.

Day 15: TV Theme

Jay-Z
- Reasonable Doubt
and…
Nas - Illmatic

Jay-Z was just coming up in the last year of Biggie’s life and they’d even done a couple of songs together. Idk if they ever performed together, but that’d be a great show.

Reasonable Doubt and Illmatic likely would’ve soundtracked a coming-of-age Wonder Years-type show about growing up in NYC in the mid-90s, and I would’ve chosen this as the theme song:

I think it’s probably reasonable to assume that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker might disagree with Times New Viking regarding the importance of audio fidelity in regards to the album recording process.

Tonstartssbandht is possibly the worst band name ever. It’s hard to spell and pronounce that being said their brand of chill indie infused rock music would get the crowd appropriately vibing before Steely Dan comes out and gently rocks the audience socks the rest of the way off.

pretty much this entire albums feels like a collection of 70s sitcoms theme songs. It would also sit nicely alongside a Tonstartssbandht song on the show’s soundtrack without anyone batting an eye.
