The February Record Spin Challenge - It's All Connected, Maaaannnnn

Day 09. Play an album that is from the same year as yesterday’s album.
Smashing Pumpkins- Siamese Dream

I always enjoyed music but it wasn’t until 1993 that a 12 year old me really fell in love with music. I received my first boombox with a CD player the past Christmas and things really took off from there. I would say 1993 was probably one of the most important years in developing my musical palette at least until I went off off to college with Napster and a CD burner in 2000 and my record collection kinda backs that claim in that I had A LOT of records from 93 to choose from. I decided to go with the Pumpkin today for the simple fact that it’s been a while since I last spun it.

Day 10. Play an album that influenced or was influenced by the artist of yesterday’s album.

My Bloody Valentine - Isn’t Anything

4EEFCF52-B8E8-4557-B0BB-B191764BAA84.jpeg
Kevin Sheilds’ distorted guitar sound was highly influential with many in the early 90s Alternative Rock era. Including Billy Corgan who has referenced MBV as a major influence on multiple occasions.

8. Play an album that mixes the genre of yesterday’s album with some other style of music.

TV on the Radio - Young Liars

Dinosaur Jr. is about as indie rock/alternative as it gets, so let's do that mixed with some electronic elements, to create TVOTR's own special brew.

10. Play an album that influenced or was influenced by the artist of yesterday’s album.

Paul Robeson – Encore - The Best Of Paul Robeson Volume II
20230210_200813.jpg

...from Mother Jones, 2001:

MJ: Paul Robeson features prominently in a lot of your work. What’s the fascination?

SW: [Laughs.] When I was young, I said I wanted to be an actor, and my father said, “Well, I’ll support you as an actor if you get a law degree.” My mother said, “You should do your next school report on Paul Robeson.” Between fifth grade and the end of college I probably did five reports on Paul Robeson! He paid his way through law school playing professional football, did the longest run of Othello on Broadway. Then when he’s singing “Ol’ Man River,” he realizes the effect that it has on people and he says, “I want to sing because that’s the most direct way to people’s hearts in affecting how they think.” And then he’s connecting to the working class across the world, so that during the Spanish Revolution in 1937 or 1938, they ask him to sing to the soldiers on the front line. He’s like, “Give me a gun and a uniform; I’ll march on the front lines and sing.” And he sings for three days and no shots are fired. The connection between his art and activism is everything that I’ve ever wanted to do.

Saul Williams is responsible for me even knowing who Robeson was, let alone having anything of his in vinyl (and an old hard drive or two)

11. Play an album that does something very different with an instrument used on yesterday’s album.

Robert Johnson played a guitar.

Jimi Hendrix played a guitar.

They are different...

Let's do a bootleg from the always reliable TAKRL (The Amazing Kornyphone Record Label). Bought this during my early 80's college daze...

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Pipe Dream-Recorded On Stage In Amsterdam 1968

"All News is Good News" Instrumental Music Recorded in Coburg By Surprise Chef

Yes, I try my best to keep the hype stickers! Not saying it's a direct influence but it feels like groups like this saw what Soul Fire, Daptone and Truth & Soul did and weren't afraid to share their love for this kind of music with the world!

Whoops, fell behind

6. Play something from the same record label as yesterday, but by a different artist.

The Smashing Pumpkins -
Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness

DAE9BCA5-CC0D-408A-9C9B-95C2BFC3DB68.jpeg

Also released by Virgin Records (my last selection was Daft Punk’s Homework). I chose this “cover” specifically to prep the next record…

8. Play an album that mixes the genre of yesterday’s album with some other style of music.

Truly - Fast Stories… From Kid Coma

F9830AAE-594D-4678-B14F-3F932B9CB9E0.jpeg
Take 90s-era alternative rock (this features members of Soundgarden and Screaming Trees) and psychedelic rock… and cram it into a sort of concept album about a comatose kid reliving a past summer. Totally overlooked album at the time (1995)

Squarepusher - Feed Me Weird Things
BFB0AB79-4173-46C4-84C8-8CB993D4E861.jpeg
Squarepusher uses samples of traditional instruments (guitars, bass, drums, etc…) and reconceptualized and manipulates them in ways that make them sound at once foreign and familiar.

9. Play an album that is from the same year as yesterday’s album.

Diverse - One A.M.

Young Liars came out in 2003, just like this one, the only album Diverse put out. Tracks are produced by RJD2, Madlib, and Prefuse 73, which I believe makes this the most 2003 that an indie hip hop album can be.

Do Make Say Think "Other Truths" - both Do Make Say Think and Surprise Chef make primarily Instrumental music using similar instruments and the results sound nothing alike! Both fantastic and you're never going to mistake one for the other!
