They didn’t release a bad record, releasing consistently wonderful power pop albums ‘til the very end. I’ve still not completely processed music’s loss of Adam Schlesinger

Day 13

  • Arcade Fire – The Suburbs

The last time I saw Parliament/Funkadelic, there were 19 people onstage.

Since this was a Tiny Desk Concert, they scaled it back to 9...

Low - HEY WHAT

20230314_002932.jpg

Despite this being the final album of husband and wife duo Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker, it was my introduction to a full record of theirs. It didn't quite click at first, but after several repeated listens, I was amazed around the fifth time. The industrial noise paired with elements of their slowcore origins made for a wonderful marriage, it was their interpretation of applying pieces of some of the modern experimental zeitgeist to where man meets machine. But truthfully, I think the latter observation hinted at something more tragic.
RIP Mimi. I had a ticket to see Low last year but the show would be postponed to this year and then, of course, cancelled in November.

Day 11
Play another country album

I associate country music with a time in my life that was fairly unpleasant, so I just usually avoid most of it. The last 10 years or so I've lessened this avoidance, but only somewhat, and usually when it was REALLY cheap....like a Garth Brooks box set for 15 bucks.

Play an album that has crossover appeal.

The long lost country album from Lee Ving - the singer for the punk band FEAR. I know I wouldn't have bought it had it not been for the crossover appeal.

Play another breakup album.

Alternate takes and mixes of a breakup album...and this just was an easy pick after playing the above album.

St Vincent - Daddy’s Home

Jack Antonoff is with out question my favorite producer working rn! He has helped several of my favorite artists put out my favorite works by them and has even helped artists I’m not as into put out albums that I love! He has also produced 3 of my personal AOTY winners making him the most awarded person technically. I know people seemed burned out on him and his stuff isn’t always great but I’m always excited to see what he does not!

Day 9: Beck - Morning Phase

Imagine Dragons - Night Visions

16 year old matt gave this AOTY in 2012. My top 5 from that year were

1. Imagine Dragons - Night Visions
2. Jack White - Blunderbuss
3. Bruno Mars - Unorthodox Jukebox
4. fun. - Some Nights
5. The Killers - Battle Born
Man, 16 to 26 feels like a huge chunk of time yet for me going from 30 to 40 felt like just a blip.
