Tortoise - TNT

Although it's not so strange now, Tortoise recorded this album using hard disks and remixing techniques, where cutting, copying, pasting, and looping were part of the process. Only after assembling most of the songs in the studio did they learn to play them live.

I went on a road trip with my wife years ago and we were listening to the radio and the Styx song "Come Sail Away" came on and I proceeded to sing it over and over again for the whole ride! I don't know the words but I sung it with passion and heart and my wife almost killed me by the end of the trip! It was fun for me, not so much for her and now she's forever ok with any playlist I came with unless it features Styx...


The song was also featured in one of my favorite scenes from the show Freaks and Geeks!


Oh and it's a song about Aliens!

Something about Styx “Come Sail Away” must scream late ‘70s/ early ‘80s Homecoming because the first cinematic moment that comes to my mind (outside of Cartman’s rendition) is Sofia Coppola using it to soundtrack the doomed Lisbon Girls last night of joy…

I really love that scene from Freaks & Geeks though, the part where the song switches up from slow to fast and Sam doesn’t know what to do reminds me of Junior high dances where the kids that weren’t familiar with Led Zeppelin would begin to slow dance to “Stairway to Heaven” only to be supremely confused once things start cooking.

Spinning this as it has been sitting here for a bit - I got the box set cheap, but gave the included t-shirt to my daughter. She doesn't really do horror movies, but she is into "witch" stuff and tarot cards and shit....so she liked the shirt. I haven't fit in a large shirt since elementary school.
