The Technics Turntable Fan Club - Questions, Advice, Discussion

Whereas there’s something about getting this or the GR2 or even the 1500C and messing about with upgrades and tweaks to stretch performance that sorta interests me more because I’m nuts like that…
lol. This is probably what I’ll do with the 1300G and spend more than a 1200G would cost. To begin with, I want azimuth adjustment, so the headshell on both models is problematic for me. And I’m sure I’ll be curious what a different tone arm would do.

I think a headshell and one of the APM mats from funk firm and some nice new feet would probably where I’d start.

I think his knee jerk reaction is what a lot of "audiophiles" who went with the 1200G's unmistakable quality, and are just accepting the DJ look of the table. I'm in the same boat as he is and you are, I love EVERYTHING about my 1210G except for the DJ look, but I decided the "meat and potatoes" of the deck overshadowed the look.

Honestly, if Technics made a 1200G, let's call it an 1100G that was exactly the same as the 1200G minus the DJ stuff at even just $500 less, I'd be on board, lol. The only TT that's giving me the itch is the MasterDeck, outside of that, I'd be hard pressed to replace my 1210G.
Now a SL-1300 “Basic” could be interesting- a 1300 sans arm. Save a bunch and buy an SME or whatever arm you want.

You can adjust the azimuth with the stock headshell. It’s fiddly and not the intended function of the small screw that faces up from underneath. That’s what I did. It works.

The guy who sold me my G was using a Triplanar U12 on it, and said it was incredible. Sometime a few years in the future, I'd like to upgrade the arm, and I'd probably get an SME. Or maybe a used Kuzma 4Point. Either way, I love having the option.

There's enough play in the headshell connection. You will not need additional adjustment.

However the Technics HS locks in almost perfect every time. Other aftermarket HS are a bit more difficult to align.

As far as the upgrade costs, yeah that's how I ended up with the G over a GR a few years ago.

I decided it wasn't worth chasing upgrades that end up spending the same money in the end when you could get everything up front. However costs is always the X factor for everyone.

Not for nothin', but the 1210G is smoking at the moment with the Hana SL (only 10 hours on it) strapped in, tweaked a bit on the Manley (60 gain / 800 ohms / 250pF) and the SP8's continuing to get better and better, I don't think I've heard my system sound this good.

I really, REALLY, want to go head to head with the MasterDeck :)

Anyone use non-Technics headshell with stock mat and no spacers or anything? I ordered a headshell that was crooked so waiting for the replacement but they're back ordered until November. Eyeing a Yamamoto HS-3 or LP Gear Zupreme but understand those need a little more room to work with.

I've got an HS-20 that I really liked.

FYI- none of the HS I've purchased fit as good as the Technics HS.
Unless you just want some extra weight for increased effective mass, there's not a better option IME.

Yeah, I jud find the QC on their headshells kinda sucks. I have three in total, one that came with and two I bought from Encompass. Both of those required exchanging--the first one I got was tilted downward pretty starkly, and this second one is twisted so I can't get level azimuth. I don't dislike them but would like to use my OC9XML before November :(

Ok didn't know they had those issues.

I agree with @Jbraswell, the OGs work the best, I have 3 as well, but got the extras from KAB, have had no issues with them.

This kind of review is odd to me in one respect — that he says he is not “tempted to sell” his 1200G for the 1300G as if it’s some kind of revelation. The differences between these tables are significant (particularly the tonearm), as are the prices. The only revelation would be if he _was_ tempted to sell the 1200G for the other.

As mentioned in another thread, I’ve got an order in for a 1300G at 10% off from Alma Audio, so the price difference for mine v the 1200G is even more significant. I’d prefer the performance of the 1200G (and theoretically could afford it with the same monthly payment plan I’m using for the 1300G), but i don’t want a table w the DJ stuff (although the drop light is a nice feature).

I’m still looking at turntable options bc I have a couple months to cancel the 1300G bc it’s not arriving until December, but nothing about this review tempts me to want to cancel the order for the 1300G and go w/ the 1200G, certainly not the 1200G at full price.

EDIT - I could be tempted w the 1200G at like 20-25% off, but that doesn’t seem likely anytime soon without an update to that model itself.
Well, as mentioned, I was still looking at other turntable options and found one —great deal on an open box Clearaudio Signature w the optional upgrade to the Tracer tonearm. The “Signature” is the US-only version/ of the “Signature Concept” that was introduced this year.

More in the Equipment Recs thread later today, but I’m quite happy with this outcome. It’s apples/oranges w the Technics (belt v. direct, etc.), but the Tracer tonearm is fantastic so far and the tonearm was an arguable not-a-plus of the Technics, especially at the price point of the 1300G.

After reading the Stereophile reviews in the Jan 2025 issue of the Technics SL-1300G and the Clearaudio Signature, they both seem to be fabulous tables.

I’d probably have purchased the 1300G instead of my Luxman PD-151 Mk2 had it been available at the time I purchased. The tonearm bearing on the 1300G is the same one used on the 1200G and the SL-1000R, with different lengths and armtube materials.

Interesting that the same issue covered the two models I chose between. I’m quite happy with my choice but I’m sure I’d say the same thing about the Technics, also.

What’s the difference between the 1200/1300G, the magnesium tonearm?
