Vinyl Me Please Anthology

What is this from? I whole heartedly agree with it...price they charged doesn't line up with what they deliver. But then again, it's all from a company whose CEO supposedly said if it doesn't make me money, then I don't want it to be part of our business. They know they can get away with the wrong artwork because we all paid for it already.

Click on the bolded title, it's from SHF (there is more to read) .

then it should be listed as 30 dollars because the VMP Blue Note anthology was free shipping to members (if you were in the US)
Shipping is built into the cost for VMP. Anywho, I think we can both agree that so far, for the price, VMP has currently underdelivered. And maybe you're right--maybe they were never going to actually deliver albums worth $38/album because of their past screw ups. I just had hope they would based on the VMPxBN records they released in the past.

And given the fact that they sold the anthology out in a couple of hours there is clearly a market for the advertised product at that price point

Alchemist's albums have been around $50 on bandcamp lately. There are plenty of $40 rap records too. The Anthology is limited too and way more limited than Tyler's albums (for example, Flower Boy's limited press has 3000+ owners just on discogs). Igor has been on sale for almost a week and is $40. Neither is pressed at RTI (one of the best pressing plants in the world) nor remastered by Kevin Gray (one of the best engineers in the world).

You keep lowering your pricetag on what this should have been priced at haha. At a certain point, it is expensive to get good quality vinyl pressings. I get what you mean--if this had been a non-Jazz, non-Blue Note anthology, then maybe the price point would have been $200 or under. But expecting under $30 per record with the same pressing/remastering is a pipe dream. I'm just saying that similar quality records pressing/remaster-wise are almost all at least $30 per record and often more than that. Prices on even generic records have increased greatly for the past 10 years or so at least.
You're doing some weird cherry picking. Plenty of rap albums for $20 or less too. Not to mention, I have a few Kevin Gray Albums pressed at RTI with no screw ups that were right around $20. I have lots of RTI albums that were less than $30 and many of them have warps!

When they were still priced based on their actual business plan, before they turned into scalpers, Music Matters were $35 and then raised to $40. Have you ever seen their jackets? The Prestige Mono series was $30 and went up to $35. Those jackets are beautiful too, just not gatefolds. Can you explain to me why this set from VMP is worth more than that?

All fair points. I just meant to say that there are records of all prices in all genres at varying price points. The price factor is not exclusive to jazz even though it sometimes feels like it is more prevalent in jazz vinyl.

I recently purchased 2 MM pressings (one 45rpm and one 30rpm). The packaging is vastly superior quality-wise to what these VMP pressings were (we only just learned about the packaging when receiving the records and I expected higher quality on that front). But in terms of the quality of the music and album selection, these albums simply cannot be purchased elsewhere for this price. Most have not been repressed in at least 10 years and older copies in good condition are hard to find. I would also say that the actual vinyl and remastering is on par with the MM releases I have. If the jackets had been faithfully recreated with the correct artwork, then I would be a happy camper.

I think this is the bottom line. They are charging this much because people are willing to pay this much. Honestly, they clearly could have charged more, it just would have taken longer to sell out. I bet someone was really kicking themselves for that.

They are definitely breaking new ground though, because all of the other similar reissue labels actually give a shit about their end of the deal. This is a first for me. Any idiot who reads sh.tv for a few hours knows that Kevin Gray is a good mastering engineer and RTI is a good plant. That's really all they got right here. Their initial response proves that they really couldn't be bothered to make the package LOOK like it is worth the premium that is still a higher price than established, proven, similar reissue series.

I mean you could say it’s a game changer!

Just got mine in the mail - the outer box is quite nice. Having the VMP logo on the labels was a little jarring to see, but it's fine, really. That back cover of Dexter really does stick out, unfortunately - especially when you look at it right next to Silver's back cover.

Come to think of it... didn't they have to use less-than-ideal cover scans on the Classics releases for both Archie Shepp and Donald Byrd? Hope they decide to provide a replacement - even if this was an "intentional" decision, it was a very poor one.

I've always been a VMP optimist, but it's truly becoming harder and harder these days. 😕

I mean the sad fact is I bet it took a long time for Music Matters to sell 1000 of many of their titles. It probably has something to do with how they went crazy price gouging. This seems like the kind of thing that shareholders love even though it is worse for the customer. VMP has really done a great job of building the FOMO brand, just look at how much (some) of their DMM presses are worth on discogs. I'm sure there is a breakeven point. We'll see how their next Anthology does.

Capitalism bad.

And this is why I have unsubbed from VMP. I’d rather give my money to those other labels like PurePleasure, Sam Records, AP and such who actually care about the music and the product instead of just the bottom line.
