Vinyl Me Please Anthology

My absolute guess is that it was a complete miscommunication and laziness issue on VMP's part. They likely asked for the artwork, it went through the grapevine at Blue Note. Somebody looked up one of the most recent album art scans, sent over a CD one. VMP took this as okay this is the artwork we need to use as it was sent over by BN and don't want to bother and second-guess Blue Note so we'll just use this. This happens at a lot of companies I have worked at over the years. People are afraid to ask questions and just do as they are told and then people higher up aren't involved enough and don't care enough to actually look at everything.

Blue Note likely figured that VMP isn't total amateurs (their mistake) and signed off without really looking at everything. That would be my guess since I've seen something like that happen too many times.
I’ve worked in enough large organizations to say that this is probably really accurate in how it actually happened.

Yeah, this whole debacle had me rekindling my appreciation for The Original Mono Recordings, a case where the attention to detail was off the charts (exact replica jackets, down to tip-on vs. non tip-on, exact replica labels, exact replica sleeves, exact replica inserts, etc.).
Ugh why'd you have to say that...it's currently on sale at Amazon for $141 shipped and I have been looking at excuses not to buy it...
Ugh, if I only didn't own 4 of those records already.... I mean, the pressings I own are definitely not audiophile material, but I don't know if I can justify this purchase, even when I know the quality is worth it.

Yeah, goddamn, I didn't know this existed. $211 up here but that's still a pretty damn good deal. Hmm....
I've had this in my wish list for a while now and see that it's dropped 20% so I may bite as well. It looks like there are 3 different versions on discogs (numbered, unnumbered and MOV vs. RTI discs), just FYI. But, would you look at that, EXACT jacket replicas with no garish bar codes.

I've held back because I have the MoFi of a few of them and got them for a good deal so I don't REALLY need this. I also own older copies of a bunch of the others.

My Dylans are all cheap Sony/Legacy reissues, except from John Wesley Harding, so an upgrade wouldn't hurt. Still.. I would basically be buying 4 albums I already own (although in a much better quality), so it's not that easy of a decision.

So you're telling me that owning 5 copies of Between the Buttons and 4 copies of VU's Loaded isn't normal?

UPDATE ON THE 'DEXTER CALLING' JACKET

We couldn’t be more excited that Blue Note Anthology records have started arriving this week. The feedback we’ve received has been tremendous and we’re certain that you’ll continue to enjoy the story of Blue Note as you dig into each album.

That said, you may have noticed the artwork on the back of Dexter Gordon’s ‘Dexter Calling' was incorrect. We were able to track down the original vinyl artwork and will be reprinting the jackets to deliver to all Anthology members as soon as possible. We are working on a precise timeline for when new jackets will be delivered and will expedite this process as much as possible. Please understand the printing process can take as little as four weeks, or as many as ten weeks.

We take full ownership and apologize to everyone for not catching this during our quality control process. While the production process is remarkably complex and involves several stakeholders, we make no excuses and are committed to working harder and doing better. Thank you for your understanding and continued support for Vinyl Me, Please.

I didn’t know this was a thing and as I’m just now starting to get into Dylan, this really seems like a helluva entry point for me.

I have so many horror stories...I work in animation and we have had a number of long and grueling jobs get killed after months of hard work because agency didn't share enough progress with the client along the way or because the client kept "approving" things without really taking the time to look at it and then their feedback at the very end was too far along in the process and would have caused us to redo the entire thing. I have also dealt with a lot of people trying to "mind read" what the clients or agency higher ups want because they are afraid to bother their bosses too frequently with questions. It's infuriating hah.

The flat out lying going on in this update is infuriating. I'm happy that those of you who purchased this are getting corrected jackets, but they went from "....this is the best we could find" to "We take full ownership and apologize to everyone for not catching this during our quality control process." I don't think VMP will ever earn my business back, or respect for that matter.

I'd say it is arguably THE entry point for you. It seems like a great deal and I have heard that the pressings are quite good and the way those albums are meant to be heard. Lots of good stuff on those records. Also looks like it doesn't ship for a month or two so you could always stream all of them and make sure you like enough otherwise cancel.

My favorite part (I think...there are a few...) is "you may have noticed the artwork on the back of Dexter Gordon’s ‘Dexter Calling' was incorrect." NO SHIT. SOMEHOW YOU GUYS DIDN'T NOTICE.

Also, I love the we make no excuses, buuuuut.....making vinyl is like hard you guys!! Lots of people were involved! Were those third parties the ones who messed up? I dunno! You said it not me!

For those who were wondering (paging @Enoch and others), VMP responded on facebook and said the front of the Dexter Calling jacket will be fixed as well. Whether or not their social media person who said that has passed that message along to the rest of the VMP team is another story...
