Christ the world done gone woke mad
I hate that term, but anyway.
I had this discussion with my wife the other day. It's fantastic that as a society we're trying our damnedest to be more inclusive and more conscious of the things we say.

But, the problem is there tends to be a bit of an over-correction, which is what I think we're seeing here. Things can be taken a bit too far in the name of "protecting our asses from the mob".

Dave Van Ronk does nothing for me, and I already have the swap options I’d consider. Will probably swap for credit this month.
Yeahhhhhhh far too many “doodly- do’s” on there for this guy. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure some people like “doodly-do’s”..it’s just….I PERSONALLY…..don’t care for them.

I think a lack of discourse is a problem at this point. I think John Stewart’s assessment of Chappele’s recent SNL monologue is spot on. We don’t have conversations anymore. George Carlin and Lenny Bruce provoked the taboos of the day and got people to talk about them. I don’t think we talk about things anymore, we just shut it down.

Discourse went out the window when "owning" and "triggering" people became normal for political and philosophical differences.

As some point we have to course correct though, no? I mean I guess not, I worry that I brought my kids into a world that is destined to devolve into hatred so bad it does itself in.

Stewart's entire defense of Chapelle was a shanda, disingenuously trying to protect a friend over having a conversation (that he supposedly desires) about the hateful rhetoric coming from said friend.

It's also utter nonsense - there's no "conversation" to be had with people who are openly anti-semitic, or Chapelle's piling on with that shitty monologue, and are trying to yet again blame the Jews for anything going wrong, including historical revisionism, e.g., running the trans-Atlantic slave trade. It's not taboo because it's a touchy topic, it's just trafficking in bigotry and then not liking the pushback. Chapelle isn't trying to provoke a conversation about trans people; he's just punching down and then whining about how he can no longer get laughs when he doesn't take the time to craft actual jokes. He went after the audience a few nights ago because they *dared* boo Elon Musk when he brought him on stage, who's spent the last month reveling in QAnon/Pizzagate-level tweets.

Internet v exhausting these days.

Moral of the story:

• Be kind to everyone.
• Let people be and live however they want so long as they are not being a danger or menace to their communities.
• Don't cancel people.
• Don't spend all of your free-time on Twitter, Instagram or watching the news cause you will most certainly get manipulated to wicked ends by Republicans, Democrats, Billionaires, Twitch Streamers, and just about everyone else who's bored and has an agenda of their own.

A quote to provide some food for thought: “We have Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and God-like technology.”

I dare you to name one person who has actually been "cancelled" for any reasons other than publicly, repeatedly, expressing their hatred of others or sexual violence... and even then, I've yet to see it be anything close to permanent (e.g., Louis CK just won a Grammy). It's a conservative/right-wing whine with no connection to reality. That a bunch of older male comedians have co-opted it as their own whine why they're afraid of telling certain jokes or addressing certain topics doesn't do much for its validity.

Though I'm sure you meant well, following my genuine frustration with the rise in anti-semitism (not just on the internet but it's played its part) and the general acceptance/promotion we've seen in public the last few months, what you said comes off as patronizing and privileged. Some of us don't get to stick our head in the sand and pretend it's not happening (really nobody should), nor both-sides the hate as if the left and right are equally to blame here. Kumbaya certainly won't stop the bigotry. I agree that it's exhausting.

Sorry you feel that way, I’m not your enemy.

I’ll add one more to my original list:

• don’t waste time arguing with people on the internet, it actually just increases divisiveness and polarization

I mean this is what Stewart was talking about. There is no conversation here with you. You are deciding what other's intentions are based on your bias on the subject. I'm sorry but you can't tell me what my intentions are or what Stewart's were - I do agree he was defending his friend but at the end of the day, that fact doesn't invalidate what he said.

The problem with cancel culture is that there is no discussion. I also think Mr. Weinstein would disagree with you on permanence or real consequences (and rightfully so).

I never liked CK or his humor. It was no surprise to me that he did the things he was doing, because he told you he was doing them. It's no surprise to me that the folks who enjoyed his humor before welcomed him back with open arms.

Chappelle is telling you his intention in his comedy. The problem is that the gatewatchers have decided that it doesn't matter what his intentions are, no conversation will be had. There is a big difference between what Chappelle said in his monologue and Kanye's DEATH CON tweets and admissions to idolizing Hitler.

Just like sex and profanity, we won't get to have a healthy outlook on race/diversity/hate in this country (or anywhere) if we just shut down conversation whenever we don't like something someone said.

This is how you make the world a better place:

Not by shutting up everyone who disagrees with you or says something you dislike.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

Yea —Kanye wrote the original liner notes for Folksinger.
Well, it would explain the disclaimer a lot better than the reality.

That a 1962 album liner notes uses the term "negro" several times in a non-derogatory fashion in a time when that was the term one would use.

Excuse me while I play my black card to cancel VMP for the audacity.

Damned if they do, damned if they don’t. You just know someone was going to raise a stink about it once they started shipping. We’ve all see how dumb most of the people on the subreddit are

While it's impossible for me to read every classics liner notes, I'd be really surprised if this is the first one to use the term. Maybe the first one to use it on an album for a white artist?
