Vinyl Me Please Essentials

again, any time i get a chance to shit on vmp, why not? right? im failing to find the reasons. I got neon green boot of Songs For The Deaf, and to be fair, it jams and jumps off the needle. weird right? But Queens are easily of my favorite bands of all time and an official release of basically their best album is something i joined vmp for over a year ago.. The amount of people reacting negatively about Queens and FLips is unsurprising based on the amount of shit people brought to me when i got pissed Mitski was a fucking essential..These releases are precisely the reason why I signed up, so I don't feel the need to bitch..some of yall just got vastly different taste than me. which is fine.

That's not to mitigate anyone's disappointment, but interesting to note that many times, it's not VMP's decision. I appreciate their excitement when an artist wants to be involved, even if the artist's vision doesn't always match up with member expectations.

I often question statements saying the artist picked the color. It seems potentially misleading. Do we really believe Wayne Coyne selected a basic yellow out of all the vinyl split and splatter options, and all the colors of the rainbow?

What VMP publishes: "Wayne picked the color of the vinyl"
What VMP implies: "Wayne could have selected any color combination on the planet, and he picked this yellow."

Likely actual selection process discussion
VMP: We have a few color options for the vinyl color. Here are a few shades of blue, a few yellows, and a brown. Which do you prefer?
Wayne: Are these the only options? Can we do a splatter or swirl or something?
VMP: That's not in budget for this release.
Wayne: Alright, I think yellow #2 is ok.
VMP: Are you sure you don't want the brown?
Wayne: Nah, yellow #2 please.
VMP: "Wayne picked the color"

I think it depends on the criticism to be honest.

Anything I’ve seen on here has been pretty tame “I don’t like thing, I’m swapping/not subbing”, no one is calling into question the picks in the first place.

The mitski thread on the old place had pretty nasty comments about its worthiness or ability to be classed as an essential. That was proven to be utterly ridiculous seeing as it swept most of the end of year lists. As a new release it was clearly essential in the broader sense even if it wasn’t personal to an individual. One only surmises why there was such vitriol to an album by a woman from an ethnic minority...

For the record I love all 3 of those records.
 
Dammit, I hate VMP and how they use FOMO to sell things. If they know there's going to be a high demand, then freaking press more and make more money! I want that Aretha really bad and should be able to get it without issue when it's available in November, but because they're business model doesn't make sense I may not be able to. So now they have me wondering if I should sign up for 3 months, swap this month and sell QOTSA to ensure I get Aretha. But the problem is, I KNOW THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT! And it's still tempting. So I'll (hopefully stay strong and) wait and hope I can get Aretha in a couple months. If not, fuck 'em because I used to love supporting them, but now I hate it.

I dont really see anything to back this up. It's far more likely that most artists dont really give a shit so VMP suggests colors to them, usually related to the album cover, and they figure it out from there.

Not sure why you'd suggest that any color other than yellow, blue, or brown would be out of their budget because I know no one here actually thinks that.

I think a lot of artists probably don't care. But Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips are one group I suspect might actually care and would like to be more adventurous. I could be wrong, it's all speculation. But I take most thing VMP says with a grain of salt.

Yeah translucent red with black marbling sounds amazing. One of the most beautiful colour variants I have is the Moses Sumney RSD EP which is that same colour scheme!

I’m so excited to get Songs for The Deaf on vinyl! “No One Knows” is a magnificent track. It’s freaky, devilish, sleazy yet sharp, and irresistibly catchy! The vocals are yearning and sexy and they have a real great presence too. The whispering and backup vocals are great and the drums rolls are *heeeeeaaavennnn*! That song alone is going to be really fun on my speakers!

This guy voice too is super sexy! Like it’s really out there and demanding/attention grabbing but it keeps it quirkinesses and coolness at the same time. I love it!!!

He’s a like 80ft tall ginger dude whose unbelievably cool! To be fair he’s married to Brody Dalle so he has to be cool!

They’re one of my favourite heavy bands, this is my second favourite album of theirs. Rated R is my favourite but it’s easy to get hold of, so excited for Songs For The Deaf because of how rare it was until this press. For once I hope they press it hot at Hell, this album needs to be LOUD!

I can’t wait to play Songs for The Deaf loud and for everyone in my family to be like “what the fuck is this Nathan?” And for my friends to be like “are you fucking serious?” and to be like “I can’t even with you anymore” when I play this whilst they’re over 😂😂😂

Given how VMP claimed that Blue Note gave them wrong artwork for the Anthology and then indignantly claimed they never tried to blame Blue Note I would not trust anything they say.

Yeah of all people, Wayne Coyne would be one of the ones to take full advantage of an artistic curation of his album. This is is basically the 2011 version dyed yellow and with some art stuff thrown in (yeah "new laquer" but these are digital recorded files on vinyl, it won't surpass the previous work done at Grundman/Pallas) for $30

I mean, it's a good version for anyone that doesn't have it- and if it helps anyone discover the Lips at the peak of their powers before all the weird Miley era stuff, then awesome. I just don't need it when I have the other.
