Vinyl Me Please Essentials

I’m assuming VMP is getting the special edition with the nice packaging and colored vinyl and what not. I’m sure this is going to have a wide release on black vinyl with standard packaging early-mid 2020. Similar to Demon Days.

My thoughts exactly. Exclusive retailer for short window, exclusive package and color, just like Demon Days, possibly just with a shorter window. I said it one and I’ll say it again, Chris Bellman and Pallas are the vendors QOTSA used for their last album, and not VMP’s usual vendors, there’s no way this isn’t just the first wave of a much wider reissue.

I get the concerns but I don’t see this as fleecing folks. The Mitski and Saint Vincent were far worse IMO. They didn’t come out and stole FOMO by saying “this is the only place to get the record ever”, and likely the deserve a little credit for getting the ball rolling on the reissue.

Hmmm. I bet they would wait awhile before they did their own thing but sounds like they will do some reissue of their own at SOME point

Edit: after re reading, and thinking, it sounds like they will probably announce something shortly which is why VMP may have announced this early as well
I was wondering why tgey would stoke the fomo for their november album so much in october. Especially since flaming lips seems like a pick that might do decently well on its own. If the qotsa fans would all sign up for three months in november it would be the same money vmp is making. But maybe they only got a deal with an early announcement for sftd and not a long period of exclusivity for the album. In that case it would be their interest to make everyone sign up for three months before the other options are on the table. But, yeah, lets keep the pitchforks tucked away till we know.
But if you only sign up for sftd i would say its very likely that you have other options soon.

My guess from reading all of this is that there’s likely a 3-6 month exclusivity window, which means in this day and age, we will be seeing preorders in the next month or two. VMP can’t be happy about the announcement regarding other vinyl options - sounds like something the band may have insisted upon.

My guess is that VMP is trying to lock people into 3 month plans before such preorders are announced. It’s hard to blame them even if the FOMO marketing is annoying.

In on the next few because, in my humble opinion, the Flaming Lips, QOTSA, and Aretha are all “true” essentials and the three strongest essentials picks of this year.

I Agree. I think you get good records with a 3 month plan. But if your only interested in qotsa than there are probably better options than a 3 month vmp sub

VMP caught lightning a couple of times with Fiona and Demonic Days because at least I know in the case of Gorillaz, the label was oblivious to the aftermarket craving for a reissue.

That was years ago and now that we are over ten years into this vinyl "resurgence/bubble/fad" , no intelligent band in the world is going to hand VMP a straight up exclusive that would be instantly sold out when the demand is there for them to sell thousands more through other outlets. Esp just so VMP can beat it's chest with another FOMO trophy- no, fuck that. VMP might be bitter they have to share but they are lucky to have a first announce anyway.

I don’t understand what you are saying here? They were new releases. We knew they were new releases. Surely no one on here is not daft enough to think that when it’s a new release that it’s ever going to be anything other than an exclusive colour and some fancier packaging?

But hopefully doesn't surprise you. Mitzi is a woman. VMP and its fans get UP IN FUCKING ARMS about women and then analyze the shit out of it, rake the artist over the coals, etc.

But a band like QOTSA? Let's just overlook every awful thing they've done to women and LGBTQ people and instead FOMO THE SHIT OUT OF THIS!!!

Particularly as it’s a woman from an ethnic minority. There’s always a crew that always give shit for that and don’t like it when you point it out...

Are there issues with QOTSA? I didn’t know that. As much as I love the record I’m very sad to hear that 😟

Of recent Josh (the lead singer) kicked a photographers camera and in turn the photographer in the head.

Other times he has used homophobic slurs on stage.

One of my favorite bands. Morally I don't agree with what he does at times.

But lets not make this one of those threads. We got a thread for discussing these kind of topics.

I would normally be in 100% agreement of this... but I just don’t understand why QOTSA’s camp would specifically write “additional vinyl options will be available and announced shortly”
I was wondering if they meant other QOTSA represses...it would be VERY strange for VMP to pretend like this release that they got is going to "rock the vinyl world" or whatever Storf said only for it to be a color variant of a much wider re-release right away. Maybe it becomes wider available like Demon Days (as others have mentioned) but again, I would be very surprised.

Don't forget this is storf we are talking about here. Hyperbole isn't exactly rare for him.

I respectfully disagree. This is the Essentials thread. QOTSA is the essential for the month. VMP chose to overlook QOTSA issues and instead go with what will make them $$$. Now when it comes to other artists, (PWR BTTM), they'll pull the album. But not with one that will make them this much money? Eff Josh and eff VMP for this for trying to have it both ways.

Yeah it’s a difficult one. I like this album a lot and will be happy to get it but finding this out has left a sour taste in my mouth.

It does stink of double standards and I think they’ve made a rod for their own back with storf going around the old forum saying he wouldn’t touch this that and the other with a barge pole and generally only where he didn’t like the music in question...
