Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Tbf, Songs for the Deaf has been one of the most requested albums since the conception of the VMP. Whether or not they take the artist's previous actions / personal opinions into consideration ultimately comes down to the demand vs the backlash, and this album has an abundance of the former and barely any of the latter.

It's not really a double-standard if they're doing it because a huge amount of people want them to do it, even if there's a small minority of people that would be against it.

If barely anyone cares about the "controversy" (no one even brought it up until like 15 pages after the announcement was posted here, and there isn't anything about it on any of the threads on reddit with hundreds of posts cumulative,) and if there's a huge demand for it, then why fault them for making it an ROTM?

If it was an MJ or a 2Pac ROTM, then the conversation about double-standards within VMP would make more sense because those would be both huge and controversial. With QOTSA, it's just a really popular ROTM. Nothing much else to it.

Im not sure if reddit is the purveyor of reasonable thought that you are making it out to be. Besides, if @Teeeee made their post on reddit it would have been downvoted into obscurity.

Have we actually confirmed that The Soft Bulletin ISN'T the Bellman master?
Yeah, they mention the mastering buried in the “Everything You Need to know” article (as opposed to listing in the details section of the actual release).
New cuts by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound.

It's certainly a unanimous opinion across threads on multiple vinyl subreddits, including the vinylmeplease subreddit, which has a community of people very similar to the forum's community. I don't find reddit very useful as a place for discussion, but it's certainly not the irrational echochamber that you may think it is. So many different types of people exist on Reddit that you genuinely cannot stereotype them as one overarching group no matter how hard you try.

The notion that you can't use opinions from real people with the same hobby and interest as us simply because you have an false opinion of them that's based on nothing (other than the fact that it's convenient to your post.)
You're not even making a point really, because there's no argument against what I said. It's just a failed attempt at strawmanning a website with over 300 million users. Yikes.

And you're assuming that they'd downvote Teefer simply because they're not the "purveyor of reasonable thought." If they downvote Teefer, I'd say it'd actually be very reasonable to do so. The point they made simply doesn't work for reasons I explained earlier.

What?

That's just the lacquer though, they don't identify the master he's using...

I respectfully disagree. This is the Essentials thread. QOTSA is the essential for the month. VMP chose to overlook QOTSA issues and instead go with what will make them $$$. Now when it comes to other artists, (PWR BTTM), they'll pull the album. But not with one that will make them this much money? Eff Josh and eff VMP for this for trying to have it both ways.
I don't know if this is equivalent to PWR BTTM, who were overtly posturing as allies and safe people while actively preying on young women. Josh Homme is a dick and has made big mistakes, but he's got a complicated history, including calling out bullies and homophobes and stating that they aren't welcome in his audience. PWR BTTM was denying wrong-doing and trying to get names of people who might talk about them, whereas Josh has outright apologized and publicly acknowledged his fault. And finally, PWR BTTM were pretty new as a major draw and VMP was on the front lines of promoting them that year--a pretty different position than finally pressing a classic album people have been clamoring for for years.

I'm not saying that what he's done is okay by any stretch, and certainly people should put their dollars where their values are, but I just don't think the situations are comparable. Also, does anyone know what came of the kicking incident? I heard that Chelsea Lauren was going to press charges, but I haven't found any follow-up.

It's teeeee, not teefer.

And just because it wasn't brought up in the15 previous. pages of fan-boying over it doesn't make it better. He's an ass. He's said hurtful things about the LGBTQ community. And I will always be the one to point that out. It is hard enough trying to grow up and figure yourself out as a kid without some asshat (that people look up to ) spewing shit to make you feel like an outcast.

And the argument that I'd be downvoted into obscurity on reddit? That is an absolute red herring of an argument. And I'm also super ok knowing that my value system is one that does not mesh with reddit. It actually validates that I'm living my life right knowing that reddit would disapprove, thankuverymuch

Well, your argument is that this is a good business decision and @Teeeee will probably agree. People fomo hard over this and get 3month memberships just for this release and there is not much backlash in the forum and on reddit. So it will make tgem good money. That's the exact point of the double-standard @Teeeee was referring, too. That they tolerate behaviour for a banf tgat makes them lots of money but not for smaller instances with a more vocal backlash. I cannot weigh in on the accusations at all, because the only song of mr homme i liked so far is his duett with florence on jackson so i dont know too much about his stage antics.

Yes, that's what I am trying to say. Thank you for saying it better than I could. :)

Count me in as one of those who could never understand the hype about Songs for the deaf, and this is from someone who loves Dave Grohl.

Good album but never something I've missed not owning on vinyl.

I'm really happy for those people who have been willing to sell their soul for a copy of this album, that they can finally get it. I had to laugh at the fomo bulletin that VMP had pre-emptively sent out. "you better sign up for a 3 month membership now or you may not be able to get songs for the deaf"... ok then, i guess I'm not getting songs for the deaf then.

Yeah, if I am reachin’ for a QOTSA album it’s probably gonna be Rated R. if they wanna to do a repress of that in the opaque shade of blue of the album cover as an exclusive I would probably be game. Strangely enough after SOTD drops I will have 2 QOTSA albums and neither will be Rated R. It’s funny how that works out sometimes.

Yeah, it's pretty hypocritical of them to look the other way on stuff when it's convenient for them and then play like they care about these things for other bands. Not just PWR BTTM, but also Nas, who is really popular and thus makes their position make less sense to me. I guess if Illmatic was the number one asked for record from them every month, their position would have been completely different. I guess this just plays into how Fiedler is not for anything that doesn't make him money, thus the old forum where people would point shit like this out had to go.

But hopefully doesn't surprise you. Mitzi is a woman. VMP and its fans get UP IN FUCKING ARMS about women and then analyze the shit out of it, rake the artist over the coals, etc.

But a band like QOTSA? Let's just overlook every awful thing they've done to women and LGBTQ people and instead FOMO THE SHIT OUT OF THIS!!!
*all of the applause I can muster*

I don’t understand what you are saying here? They were new releases. We knew they were new releases. Surely no one on here is not daft enough to think that when it’s a new release that it’s ever going to be anything other than an exclusive colour and some fancier packaging?

All I meant is that those were even less “exclusive” in that there were wide releases around the same time. TBH I don’t get what there is to complain about this round. In a sense this is a new release too, well reissue at least.

True but exclusivity has never been a reason they’ve given for any ROTM. I mean Aretha is widely available, I can go down my local and buy it on black tomorrow, likewise Al Green and a good number of the classics. We may get exclusive presses but if we expect them all the time we are fools. I just thought it was weird that you highlighted two of the new release rotms which could never be exclusive.
