Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Me. Charlie Brown Christmas is apparently the hold up. I chatted with Pauly last week and he said they had received it recently and my package should ship out this week. We shall see....
Hmmm... would have to be Willie Colon for me then. Unless, my pestering them about TLC, has them holding out hope that it arrives sooner than anticipated.

It always felt like a bit of an afterthought or a box to tick for me. Then again I was never all that interested, I just tucked it in the sleeve...
I never felt like it was a major sell point, but I do feel like it's fully moved into the checkbox/garbage category. My first year, even if I wasn't that into the art I did sincerely feel they were at least working with artists and helping to give them some extra exposure.

I look back to a couple of my favorite releases. With The Books, not only was the packaging truly exceptional, it was also unique. Even the art print in that package really felt curated and it was haunting, just as much of the album and album art were. It felt like one may have actually inspired the other, and it's hard to say exactly which came first. Same with the print that came with Paranoid.

I will say the Soft Bulletin release felt like it was moving back into the right direction. The art felt like something inspired by the album, and really felt like it paired with the lithograph. I have always disliked when they clearly had an artist create a "riff" of the album title or art - the print with City Lights comes to mind - but at least it was still supporting and exposing an artist.

But so many of this year's art prints feel like a lazy rehash at best. And this one really takes the cake. It's not even a riff. It's just the alternate art printed on paper. I mean if this is the direction for the future, I'd prefer they just take it out. It's just another reminder of then vs now. When the "club" used to at least feel intentional vs a big corporate money grab. It honestly makes me more critical of their records, and less forgiving of their constant mistakes. I still like getting a single ROTM, but I'm so glad I've continued to reduce my spending with them.

To each their own here. I didn’t know the alternate album art looked like that, so I’m happy with it being the print. It gives a sense of wholeness, colors are nice, etc.

The cocktail of I recall was easy ish and I had the ingredients so I actually made it. Not great, but at least no crazy ingredients.

VMP should just get rid of the art prints and use that money towards getting better higher quality inner sleeves for other exclusives (that receive the generic paper shitty inner sleeve). Those art prints don’t mean anything to me. They go straight in the bin!

Essential ROTM Art Prints and the Rap & Hip-Hop stencils automatically go in the bin!
