unrelated but this is actually all about the ethics of the term essential

Like him or not, Mayer was a big deal in the 2000s. If you want a collection of artists representing a range of music of a particular time period, a Mayer album would fit right in.
But what yβall are completely discrediting is that to a younger generation Taylor Swift & John Mayer are to them what Mariah Carey and Jeff Buckley (maybe) are to a different generation. Like you may dread a release by T Swift as I would as well but a younger crowd may swoon over it because to them itβs an essential part of their musical upbringing. VMP is always going to be catering to target demographics and those demographics are going to continue to cater to younger crowds and the vinyl hobby continues to pick up steam. Like yβall are shitting on these things because they make no sense to you but a younger crowd might feel the exact same way about getting a Bruce Springsteen release and as a multi-generational music forum itβs our duty to be weary of these dynamics.
Not arguing that everything is essential because it matters to someone somewhere. Iβm just trying to provide some perspective as one of the forums younger members. @Dead C was stumped by this choice and was wondering what he may have missed to where this could sneak in as an ROTM and Iβm just leaning in to add context for these strange 2000βs head scratchers, to me this choice made perfect sense and I was surprised to see it baffled so many! So while we can laugh off a Taylor Swift ROTM as being a funny choice it could probably make a case for being essential to a large younger demographic is all. Hope that helps clarify my position.
I fixed it for youNo emojis. Not reading this.
How about:
Oh my goodness! You think his music is terrible! In America. He never came to close to breaking outside the US. I only heard of him and his terrible music because he went out with much more successful and talented women.
Oh my goodness! You think his music is terrible!
Iβve listened to Continuum and itβs not that bad! Like.......oh my! I can see that John Mayerβs sound would be polarising for many listeners but itβs not terrible! But each to their own!
You probably think Gwen Stefaniβs debut album is also terrible and I absolutely love that album!
Mmmmmm I kinda feel you on this one! It is a bit bland but I feel like itβs really breezy, smooth and kinda sexy! Thereβs something really classic/classy and clean about Continuum too, even if I feel there are a few duds on the album. Totally get where you are coming from!It just so bland lifeless Nathan, like porridge made with water and not even a sprinkle of salt.
Letβs leave Gwen out of this, theyβre not even remotely compatible musically.
Is this the official tracklist of the Sign boxset?
Posted on Amazon as a pre order then pulled - itβs the second time that tracklist has been Leaked so looking likely
Those would all make more sense to me than Jim Sullivan.Guess we should prepare for Essential ROTMs from Nickelback, Creed, Lifehouse, Audioslave, The Fray, James Blunt, Jack Johnson, and Three Doors Down.
No wonder they got rid of The Spinsβ’.
So.....anymore leads on the potential Tom Waits pick?
