Vinyl Me Please Essentials

John Mayer said some horrible, awful, disgusting things 10 years ago - no doubt about it. But it was 10 years ago and I think he’s sincerely apologized since then and has learned from it.

Exactly. I can't understand "cancel culture". Yes, I believe in responsibility and accountability. Also, I believe in forgiveness and redemption.

Just read through hundreds of comments and came here to say I love The BEP.

welp, see ya later!

BEP IS CANCELLED THO! THEY MADE A SONG CALLED "LETS GET OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE".

Agreed We should give people the chance to listen, learn, and grow which it really seems like he did. If you hate his music fine, but he seems just as disgusted by what he said 10 years ago as everyone else.

But I'm also not in either of the demographics that he stated offensive things about. So end of the day, I'm ultimately not the one who decides if he should or shouldn't get a pass for what he said.

This is my feeling as well.

If I got held to some of the ignorant things I said as a teenager, I'd have probably been cancelled too. But I grew the hell up and learned A LOT since then and I can't imagine even thinking some of those things now. Really glad I was not in the spotlight for all of that like John was. Some people take to young fame gracefully, others not so much. But I do think that it speaks to his growth the wide range of artists that work and are friends with him. Can't imagine that would be the case if he still thought the same crap from the Playboy interview.

I do respect others opinions on him here though, as I haven't lived their experiences.

Who suggested John Mayer be cancelled?
It isn't cancel culture to point out that it's hypocritical for VMP to press a John Mayer record when they refuse to press other abusers.

Who gets to say that John Mayer has "done his time" or "taken responsibility?" You or me?
How does Jessica Simpson feel about it? How about Black and Brown folks?

It's funny how so many people here want to comment about how he is remorseful and make this about his character and then simultaneously say these things don't matter and it's just about liking the music.

If it's just about the music, buy the record, talk about why the music is meaningful to you, etc. If people need to justify buying the record (to themselves) with "but he's apologized" that's a pretty lame reason to buy it... or anything.

What @tvham posted naturally lead me to what I said. It wasn't as direct as much as it was a broader comment on a topic.

I was never invaliding Jessica Simpson or Black and Brown folks. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, as am I. I'm not speaking for anyone.

I'm not justifying buying the record. I'll probably get it but I have to weigh out the other titles available at the time. His personal behavior of the past doesn't weigh in to my choice. If it does to some, so be it. Buy or don't buy what you want.

The point is we don't get to decided whose redeemed and who isn't, and I'm not sure why that's relevant to the conversation anyway.

Using the term "cancel culture" and suggesting JM has redeemed himself to dismiss the opposing take IS invalidating the experience of those people whether it's intentional or not.

I said that I believe in forgiveness and redemption. Not sure how that is controversial. Let's move on.

Forgiveness and redemption should be earned though? Not just granted by passage of time? Have there been any acts of genuine remorse or to understand why those comments were problematic? I’ve not seen anyone show any evidence of anything like that.

I didn't weigh in on if John earned or didn't earn forgiveness or redemption. I weighed in on the broad concept of cancelling.
I don't know what he has done privately or publicly. He may have or may not have listened, apologized, grown and tried to make amends. I don't know, I'm not John.

Sooooooooooooo, what about the OTHER two 90s albums?

At this rate it could be anything and I'm taking all the albums I might want/expect, and crossing them off the list as that seems like the most likely outcome.

Two wildly different Genres and Continuum eats up the "pop" genre...maybe.
So we're probably not getting Spice Girls/Spice (sorry @Joe Mac and @jaycee - we know you were keeping your fingers crossed for it 🙃 )

So what are we thinking then: Hammer/The Funky Headhunter and Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines?
Or Maybe Pat Boone/In a Metal Mood and Korn/Follow the Leader (this would be VMPs idea of upping their "Metal Game" without really upping the Metal Game at all)?

At this point, the sky's the limit and I think we can assume if we *think* it might be a good choice/fit for the Essentials Sub, that automatically rules it out.
Sorry Tom Waits fans.

What I really really want is more friends in low places
