Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Did the original misleading hint say the second artist comparison was specifically with "their first album"? It of course only solidifies the OutKast/Badu/Holiday theory.

Any guesses on which Badu album we might be getting?

And going back to Billie Holiday, I went with Lady Sings the Blues as it was kind of her last "great" album, right when her voice was beginning to give out. Something from her prime would be great but then it'd probably end up having to be a compilation of sorts, given we'd be going back to the 1930s and 40s.

Not unheard of to make a compilation for Essentials, but unless there was some old definitive compilation release of her early work I'm not familiar with, I think VMP will go with one of her proper albums. I know @NathanRicaud wants Lady in Satin, but I dunno, it's not exactly the best album that showcased her vocals, given it came out right around the time she died.
They didn’t say the first album part on the initial clue. I still think it’s weird to say Stankonia “features Andre 3000”...but VMP isn’t really the best with words

I think if it wasn't also used to mean something different commonly on rap albums it would be less confusing. Like saying a movie features the excellent acting of whoever plays the leading role wouldn't sound too weird, so he could have been using it that way. Less of a stretch than spouse imo.

And I guess if he said half of the October duo was “romantically linked” that would make it even more obvious.

tbh i dunno if i even like outkast.. i enjoy southernplayalistic to an extent but ATLiens is too long (i got sleepy during it and wanted to pause it but i dont like pausing because i miss important stuff and my paranoia clicks in), aquemini i tried too many times to like that i just cant, and stankonias length intimidates me

I think you should stop trying to force yourself to like music just because it is acclaimed. You clearly don't have much interest in or get much enjoyment from Outkast based on this comment, but you've also been saying for a while that you're afraid if you unsubscribe from VMP that they'll decide to do Stankonia and you'll miss it... why would you be worried about missing an album that it doesn't seem like you'll really like? I'm not angry at you not liking Outkast (I can see them being an acquired taste) but I think it would be helpful to stop trying to like them if you feel like you know that you don't. If ATLiens bored you and you don't like Aquemini after multiple listens, you probably just don't care for Outkast. VMP doing Stankonia won't change your mind on that.

I feel like VMP pushes people to like music they sincerely don't like. Just because something is "essential" or "classic" to one, doesn't mean its "essential" or "classic" for everyone.

Nail on the head. There are plenty of "acclaimed" albums I either just don't care for or like but still believe aren't as great as I was told they were. That doesn't take anything away from them - lil ol' me can not like something and that doesn't take away its shine (I think we often look at it as a binary proposition - i.e. if I don't like it, then I must dislike it; but that's not true).

Case in point: I was going back and forth a little w/ @NathanRicaud about Sade the other day. I don't believe the discography is as strong as him or people in general - I'm in the minority there. But I feel ok about it. I don't think it's shit, I just don't regard it the same way as others do. It doesn't take away from others ability to enjoy it, and me not enjoying it in the same way doesn't make me feel like I've not reached my full potential as an actualized human being or some such nonsense. It's all taste. I'm not going to buy it just so I can say it is in some sort of all-encompassing collection.

Funny enough, this also reminds me of a review someone left on RTJ4 on discogs. It was a long review and they were negative about RTJ but they put thought into it and gave reasons why and did a track-by-track star rating (those stars did not go very high). I left a reply saying that, while I didn't agree, I appreciated them leaving a balanced, thoughtful review. Of course, someone flamed them by calling them a "fuck boy" and yada yada. Like they were personally offended that someone didn't like their musical taste.

Yeah I’ve always found the acclaim Sade gets around these parts strange, its reputation when I was getting into music was as the soundtrack to a suburban middle aged, middle class “sophisticated” dinner party in the 80s where no one actually liked music...

Lol...I've never heard it described that way but I'm going to steal it...it's an apt description to how it makes me feel. Not bad, but not special.

OMG, yay! It looks like we really are getting OutKast, Erykah Badu & Billie Holiday! 😍👏👏👏🌈🙌

I am extremely excited and I would be extremely happy if VMP did any store exclusives to compliment the Essentials ROTM picks! I’m hoping OutKast do a store exclusive for ATLiens if we go in fact get Stankonia as the Essentials ROTM! I would be so happy with any Erykah Badu store exclusive to compliment her Essentials ROTM! 😄😇🥰🤗

yeah i think i might just want to stay on VMP for no reason (or maybe something else because then i took a 3 hour nap after posting this)... i was only curious about doing it because southernplayalistic surprised me by pretty solid (minus some skits i kinda wish weren't there) and i wondered if stankonia would wow me... i will see if it changes but i dunno

Yeah, and I can’t stand The Strokes, The White Stripes, or most of Kendrick Lamar’s discography. It’s fine to not like acclaimed stuff!
I'm convinced the hype over Is This It has to be a "you had to be there" kind of thing because I get almost nothing from that album. I guess I can see why it might have been a big deal in 2001 but I just find it very blah.

btw listening to stankonia (right at B.O.B) and im liking it pretty well... maybe it will not get as good when it gets later into the album but the beats are a lot better than on the other albums because it feels like a new song each time and the only major bug is that i just dont really like skits on albums... maybe i was just sleepy while listening to ATLiens so it was too long.. but who knows im only halfway through

Or at the the very least give em a beat. Maybe revisit them in a few years maybe they will click with you then. You don’t need to fit a square peg into a round hole.

If that's what you like about it, I think you will probably like Stankonia best of their albums.

As an example of different strokes, that's why I rate it a little lower then Aquemini and ATLiens generally, because it seems more disjointed to me. But that's cool, 'cause we're different!

I think Stankonia will definitely WOW you! 💯

I know you’ve heard of the classic ‘Ms. Jackson’, but have you heard of the other single on that album?

‘So Fresh, So Clean’ is a groovy, moody, nocturnal, relaxed, levitating, spacious, effortlessly sexy and cool track! I think you’ll really like that track Dukey! Sleepy Brown’s smooth crooning in the chorus really hits the spot! 🎯

The other single, ‘B.O.B.’ is an bombastic, frenetic, post-apocalyptic track where André 3000 has an explosive flow and Big Boi a zippy flow! OutKast are able to rap over this jittery, furious, Drum-N-Bass instrumental and it reminds me of Danny Brown rapping over insane instrumentals like “Ain’t it Funny”. B.O.B. is a politically charged banger that I’m sure you’ll love too Dukey! 💣💥🧨

Stankonia is a very long album like Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, but start with those three singles first Dukey, and fall in love with them, and then when you listen to that album in full, it might be less intimidating to face ☺👍

And what I love about Ms Jackson is that it’s such catchy, radio friendly track, but the song stays true to OutKast’s aesthetic! It’s just a genius song, and that’s what Stankonia is! It’s all schitzophrenic, dynamic, star-power genius-ness squished all into one album! ♥

i heard the singles.. B.o.B is probably the best.. Ms. Jackson is 2nd, i am not the biggest into so fresh so clean though

also i wouldn't really call TPAB long... it doesn't feel long and in fact feels more like its a perfectly paced movie
