Vinyl Me Please Essentials

They've teased it multiple times recently on Twitter and Instagram. I think it's pretty much a lock.
Storf also apparently told someone a few days ago that another of the "Top 5 most requested" titles was gonna be in Essentials this go-round. That (now-outdated) Top 5 list was When the Pawn, De-Loused, Channel Orange, Section 80, and a random niche title. It's not gonna be the random title and VMP has already done When the Pawn, so that leaves just three.

Of those three, only De-Loused matches the years given in the first official clue.

And for what it's worth, I also congratulated Storf on getting Mars Volta on Twitter and he didn't deny it.

Yeah I think honestly at this point the only question is, are we gonna see any Volta exclusives to go with it. Since Cloud Hill hasn't done any, and don't appear like they're going to. We could see Frances or the others as limited releases. They're going to be crazy expensive to match Cloud Hill if so, but I wouldn't be surprised.

A poster on Instagram who nailed most of the details on the Cloud Hill releases before they were announced, had said that there were both color and black vinyl presses coming for the individual albums. So these could be the color, or it could just be the one.

That De-loused ROTM is already gonna be the cheapest option available since Cloud Hill is charging $60 for it. So maybe any possible exclusives will also be... similarly priced.

VMP is the cheapest buy? Fucking strange times we live in.

Unless they legit got maggot brain for August it seems they got a dud quarter for me

Sucks because I don't want any store stuff either and dunno what to do with the credits

I can't imagine that the individual exclusives, if they come, won't be for more than Cloud Hill is charging. I don't think they'd allow their product to be undercut like that. I'm sure the fees VMP pay for the large essentials run offsets the money Cloud Hill would lose in the lower price of that one title.

Manifesting Maggot Brain and Midnight Marauders 🤞
Id probably stay for those

But my faith is dying, I dunno if deloused is worth 80 bucks since I haven't listened in a long time and long proggy songs don't usually hit me (like with Miranda off Frances the mute.. the intro and outro are pointless and destroy an absolutely fantastic short art rock track). I could relisten to it but I'm just kinda cynical about it all

It's probably dolly parton

And look I respect dolly, but having gone to pidgeon forge for a week made me broken even if the food was great

Maybe it will be Can, Gil-Scott Heron or Sly & The Family Stone! Imagine if it was John Lennon though!!!!! 👀🤞

I’m sure you’ll like many other albums from 1971 Dukey! Who knows, we could get the shock of our lives and they do David Bowie’s Hunky Dory or Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On! Although I’m sure VMP won’t, and won’t be able to do any of those two albums!

Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On is from the Motown label though and they did that Motown Anthology! Even though I have the One-Step of What’s Going On, I hope it’s Marvin Gaye, just so then it’s likely we get the sexy, romantic, rich, luxurious, intoxicating I Want You as a Classics ROTM! 😩😩😩

But I also want Sly & The Family Stone so then we can get Fresh as a Classics ROTM! 😩😩😩😩😩

I'm calling August Essentials as Herbie Hancock - Mwandishi.

Storf kept saying "Listen to more Mwandishi" at the end of the the Herbie Anthology podcast.

That, Maggot Brain, or Coat of Many Colors would all get me to sign back up.

oh shit

Edit: To add some actual content to this post, I really hope VMP has more Herbie on the way, whether it's through Essentials or exclusives. During their recent Anthology live Q&A, Storf talked a bit about VMP's original list of albums they wanted in a box set... with most shot down by Herbie himself. Mwandishi was definitely one they pushed for so saving it as Herbie's Essentials would be killer. One other album they brought up that I wasn't familiar with was his 1994 album Dis Is Da Drum, which they basically described as trip hop before trip hop even existed. It's never been pressed on vinyl, so that would be an amazing get if they had it as an exclusive or something.

Long story short, VMP seems to have built up a nice working relationship with Herbie, and I hope it means more is on the way. :)

I took note of that too. I think the VMP curated set would have been pretty sweet. I’m very fond of Dis is Da Drum and would love to see a pressing of that.

I would definitely lose my shit for Dis Is Da Drum! I have the Call It '95 single, which is the closest you can get on wax, but also just leaves me wanting more any time I spin it. I'd be willing to pay too much for the full album which is likely what it would cost as a VMP exclusive, so that's perfect!

Oh man, I would be all in if it was Mwandishi.

I have mentioned it before but in his autobiography, Herbie says that his best-ever performance was a Mwandishi live gig where everyone in the group just clicked perfectly. I seem to remember him describing it as an otherworldly exerience. He used to record live gigs on a handheld recorder to play back and that tape used to get played constantly until someone in the group lost it.

With all that above I was really surprised that he didn't include the album in the set. Maybe the reason was that it was going to get released anyway....
