Vinyl Me Please Essentials

I’m listening right now and I remember why I liked it so much. I was super into the complex time signatures/changes, the sprawling song structures, the angular guitar playing, the wild vocals and just how.. aggressively prog it was.

My tastes have clearly changed though because it’s not hitting me the same way it used to. Gonna give it some more time, maybe I’ll rediscover my love for them.

I've never really gotten into Mars Volta. Given how many friends love them, I've always felt like I should. Is this the record to start with?

Sidenote: my OLD local used to have this record in the jukebox, and one of my friends used to turn on the entire album. It was not the most popular move.

Or I wonder if part of the deal with Cloud Hill was it couldn't match the original press and had to be sufficiently different in order to keep it separate from their presses. I dunno..
I'm going to answer my own question here. The OG press of DeLoused actually used that artwork, all the subsequent releases except for one CD release, used the alternate gold head art. So technically it's the more accurate OG representation to use the lake pic.

Before it was confirmed as Mars Volta, someone on reddit suggested "100th Window" by Massive Attack, and if that could be considered an "Essential" Massive Attack album over "Mezzanine" or "Blue Lines" I honestly do not know what that term means anymore.
That's always been the case though. Tbh, I think VMP has been doing better with their Essential records actually being essential of late, but they are also the company that picked Sorcerer as their Essential Miles Davis record, the last, middling Sleater-Kinney album that broke up the band as essential, and don't get me started on the Tennis and ole' Dead Eyes (aka Kevin Morby) picks.
