Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

I never seem to have issues with surface noise (knock on wood), but I'm pretty sure it's because I only possess an AT-60. I spend so much money on vinyl, I never seem to have any to invest in better equipment. I'm afraid when I finally do get to that point, all the stuff that sounds fine now will end up sounding like shit. As of right now though, ignorance is bliss.

As a former AT60 member I can say it kind of works like that. Do you clean your records in anyway? For the most part upgrading my equipment has made a majority of my records sound far better but the bad ones are baaaaaaad lmao

Suddenly all those pretty Dead Oceans and Secretly variants seem a LOOOOT less attractive when you can actually hear what they sound like. IT AIN'T GOOD

So I've just listened to my VMP Shabaka copy. I've got it for my International store credits swap plus $3.
While the album itself is great and the record generally sounds good, I have similiar issues as @Urbs_hott . During the last 25 seconds of my side A and C there is a strong surface noise that continues after the songs end. At the end of Side B and D this surface noise starts right after the tracks end. Also I've got 2 pops on Side B, Track 1, so have to ask VMP for a replacement /refund.
@Mather probably is right not to pick this up. I've unfortunately only learned about these issues a day after going for it. Now I wonder are there clean copies of this? What's the experience of others who have picked this up from VMP? Does it make sense to go through replacements?

I’m sorry to hear that. Pretty disappointing isn’t it? I have 3 copies, all with the same issue. I’ve just requested a fourth and final copy and suggested that they do a repress like they did with the Stars record. Not getting my hopes up though.

Wow that's really bad you already have gone through 3 copies.

Actually it makes me wonder if they're well aware of a large spread noise issue on this recording and whether that's why they don't put it in swaps? If they would've put it in swaps it probably would've sold out quickly. The way they act now they still have many spare records to go through for people like us.
It seems though that some received good copies so let's keep on hoping.

I used to have an AT3600 and AT95E and then I have upgraded to an AT-VM95ML. That was a huge improvement on sound. Several records that did sound a bit muddy to me before (for instance the VMP Nilüfer Yanya or Chester Watson) sound so much better now. Still bad pressings or pressings with damages still sound bad.

I’ve actually had the same thought. If that’s true I guess I shouldn’t stop at 4 copies. Eventually I’ll have them all!

And they will all be terrible 😑

I do clean. I’m very fastidious to the vinyl as well as the sleeve. I’ve been like that since I was a kid. I return them if there’s a warp, or other obvious issues. I also look at reviews and the forum to stay away from pressings that sound like issues. Walked away from quite a few amazon deals because the reviews scream bad pressing. That being said, I know I will have some of those shitty ones. I’m the same with my cds. I have nearly 9,000 cds, but listen to them through my Bose wave system I bought 10 years ago, or through my Jeep speakers. But I can say for certain 99% of those cds are mint. I really need to invest in some equipment, but raising 7 children, and spoiling 6 grandchildren, it’s always been about using my extra 20 for this lp or that cd, and never about saving for equipment. Hahaha...I even used the 6 month payment plan for my Bose

7 CHILDREN! I can definitely understand how upgrading the sound system can take a back seat with that much activity running around. Good on ya my friend, that’s a beautiful feat, hopefully they don’t drive you too bonkers! I get the whole savings drag, it takes a while, I had to save up for a year or so to upgrade my deck, another 6-8 months for a dedicated pre-amp but each investment has just made me fall more and more in love with the music. I remember listening to my expensive presses on my AT60 and thought they sounded great so you can imagine my surprise when I finally got my Fluance RT85 and they sounded even better. I’m officially hooked. Maybe shoot for a quicker upgrade in something like a U-Turn Orbit? People really seem to love em and you can get going on them fairly quickly seeing as they don’t start off too expensive! Either way the journey is what’s made vinyl collecting so fun and the best set up is the set up you have. I used my AT60 for I think 3 years before I upgraded and was honestly fine with it until I joined this here forum and started feeling the FOMO looking in the “Show Us What Makes Your Vinyl Spin” thread, going in there was a bad idea 😂.

Now look, I'm not sure what the market is for children these days, but I know HISTORICALLY traveling circuses tend to pay a pretty penny for the strong ones. That might net you a lot of Bose speakers. Think about it.

I just got around to playing mine and I have the same issue on side A at the end of track 2.

If you look at the last 90 or so seconds of each side, you will see the Grooves don't look the same. It's as if they are shallower from not being pressed correctly.

In testing and examining the record I found if I put the needle down in the shallow looking groove area at the end of the side, there is major distortion for several seconds until the needle rides in the groove correctly.

I've already sent an email for refund. @Mather , if you want one of these as a PIF, it's all yours.

Thanks man but honestly if it's got that typical GZ end of side crackle I'll pass. I can flatten any warp pretty much no matter how bad, but I can't fix crackle. So everyone send me your horrid warps but keep that damned crackle out mah face.

Thought about that, but seeing as they're all grown up, and at 6'1" and 250 lbs., I'm the little one in the family, i don't think it will work. Funny story though...when our oldest son was beginning to strap on his wild side, getting into all kinds of shit, and listening to some extremely dark music, I "cleaned" up his room ond day while he was at school. That evening at the dinner table, we had a pretty nice meal for a family of nine. Usually, we pinched pennies and went with the basics, but this night it was pretty nice. Part way through dinner, my wild son noted I cleaned his room, and asked me where all his cds were at. Straight-faced as I could manage, I said, "You're eating them." I remember it was very quiet the rest of the meal, but I did get 3 bucks each at the local music store for those damn things, and it was quite the example for his brothers and sisters. He grew out of his wild side soon after.

I wonder if this problem is specific to the VMP pressing? Are there any people here, who have bought the regular black pressing of the Shabaka album and have similiar issues?

If you enjoy used equipment and willing to take the time to track it down you can put together a really decent setup for a fraction of the cost. Lots of the Japanese built components from the late 70s early 80s are high quality and built like tanks. Some people prefer new and I appreciate that but I enjoy the aesthetic of vintage equipment and the hunt for quality items at cheap prices.

Have you given the recent Cherry Red reissues a go? I have Green Mind and Where You Been and they sound wonderful. Some nice bonus material included on them also. I hope they continue reissuing more of their back catalog.
I came close, but if I remember right, these were kinda expensive? I’ll have to check again to see if they’ve come down. Or convince myself that it’s worth shelling out a bit more.
